Samuel “Sam” Eugene Gunther

Family services for Samuel “Sam” Eugene Gunther, 71, Lawrence, will be held at a later date. Sam passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at LMH Health.

Sam was born on November 26, 1949 in Garden City, KS, the son of Samuel and Emma (Adam) Gunther.

He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus through St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, BBQing, bowling and traveling.

He worked for 15+ years at Quaker Oats and then for 25 years as a plumber for the University of Kansas before retiring in 2015. After retirement, he worked at Menards and Eagle Bend Golf Course.

He is survived by the love of his life of 30 years, Jane Gunther of Maize, KS, his children, Corinne Gilges (Brian), Ottawa, KS, Cy McCormack (Miranda), Wichita, KS, Adrienne Allen (Sam), Osage City, KS; and five grandchildren, Clinton, Macy, Luke, Emma, and Hayden.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sam’s name to LMH Oncology and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

    My thoughts and prayers are with Sam’s family. I didn’t know the family, but Sam worked for me as a marshal at Alvamar Golf course and I worked with him at Eagle Bend Golf course. A great guy that will be missed.

    I only knew Sam a few years at KU but I am better off knowing him. He was always friendly, helpful and courteous. He was full of knowledge that he loved sharing with his coworkers. Sam will always have a place here at KU. Deepest regards to his family. He will be missed.

    How many years ago were we all in aerobics together? Sam always cracked me up and made it fun. I would run into him on campus from time to time and he would always have a warm smile and a joke.
