Sally Germaine Bloom

Memorial Mass for Sally Germaine Bloom, 94, Lawrence, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 27th, 2023, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence.  Sally passed away just short of her 95th birthday, on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Brandon Woods Townhome surrounded by family.

Sally was born on July 6, 1928, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the daughter of C.E. and Josephine (Jacomè) Bloom.   

Sally attended Barat College of the Sacred Heart, Lake Forest Illinois majoring in Economics and took her post graduate work at Northwestern University. Shortly after graduation she would go to Washington, D.C. and work on the staff of three Nebraska Senators, the late Dwight Griswold, Mmes. Eva Bowring, and Hazel Abel.

Following that position, Sally went on to work for Earl Butz, who served as United States Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. This position led Sally to travel nearly all of the Continents. After working for Butz, Sally went on to work at the CIA as secretary to former Director George HW Bush. Sally continued her position under William J Casey, William H Webster, and Robert M Gates. She retired in the early 90s.

Sally had numerous hobbies including traveling, museums, playing bridge, boating, spending time with friends, crosswords, and watching jeopardy.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church of Lawrence KS and Christ Child of Chevy Chase Maryland.

Survivors include her sister Jan Harkins, niece Sara (Travis) Oliver, great-niece Alyson Oliver, niece Christine Moore (Lou), and several relatives in the Tucson, Arizona area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, God daughter and niece Phoebe Harkins, brother-in-law Dale Harkins, and brothers; Clifton Bloom Jr and Phillip Bloom.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sally’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Boys Town, Corpus Christi School, Holy Family Catholic Church of Eudora KS, and Friends of Hospice of Jefferson County and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Colby KS on a later date.

    Sally was a great person. I enjoyed taking care of her for years. Sara did such a great job of caring for her as well as her mother. Having reviewed her life activities, I wish I had asked more about her very interesting life. RIP Sally. Jerry Pees

    I loved my Aunt. I have nothing but fond memories of summer college vacations spent with her in Washington. She was a lot of fun and and game for adventure. Sally was a great encourager from my young years to the present. Thank you Jan, Sara, Alyson and Travis for taking such good care of her.
