Robert “Bob” Schaffer

Robert “Bob” Schaffer was born November 25, 1946 in Beloit, KS, to Marjorie Allen Schaffer and Loran Schaffer. He passed away at Star Living Memory Care in Lawrence on Friday, March 10, 2023, due to complications from a hemorrhagic stroke he suffered on January 30, 2019.
Visitation will be Monday, March 13, 5:30 to 7:30 pm (with family present) at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence (120 W. 13th). Funeral service will be at the chapel Tuesday, March 14, at 10 am. Private graveside burial will be at 2 pm.
He attended 12 years at St. John’s Catholic School, where he enjoyed sports. He graduated in 1964. He served six years in the Kansas Army National Guard and Reserves. After high school, he moved to Minneapolis, KS, to work at Honorbuilt/Eldorado RVs. There he met his future wife, Joyce Kindall, and they were married January 4, 19691. In 1966, he was hired by Hallmark Cards in Lawrence, KS, where he enjoyed a 41-year career. Bob and Joyce both retired from Hallmark in 2007.
One of Bob’s passions was competitive BBQ with dear friend Bill Simon. He was a long-time member of KCBS and competed for more than 25 years. The team won many awards and ribbons.
While employed by Hallmark, Bob served on the Hallmark Community Service Committee and was chair for a few years. He was active in several community organizations as well: Boys and Girls Club; Ballard Center; Junior Achievement; Chamber of Commerce; Leadership Lawrence.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Ambria Schaffer (Olathe) and daughters Jennifer and Brianne and her children (Ana and Leo); daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Greg Krumsick (Omaha, NE) and daughters Kelsey and Avery; his brother, Richard Schaffer (Claflin) and his children and families; his brother-in-law, Richard Kindall, and sister-in-law, Sharon Kindall, (Lawrence); sister-in-law, Nancy Kindall (Gladstone) and her sons Dustin and Darren Kindall (KCMO) and their families. He is also survived by other extended family members and many, many wonderful friends.
Bob had a great smile, laugh, and sense of humor—Oh, and “a little OCD—and an ornery streak.” He was also quite the perfectionist and was always ready to help whenever someone needed a hand. And if you considered yourself a friend to Bob, you were his “best friend” when you were in his presence. All of our hearts are broken, and it’s hard to imagine how we are going to move forward in our lives without this amazing, caring, loving, silly, and always thoughtful man. And last—but not least—he leaves behind his best buddy, Wolfie, and his furry sister, Sugar. However, it seems they sort of understand what is going on. They will be a great comfort to Joyce as we move into the next chapter of our lives without our best friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Cloyce Kindall; mother-in-law, Ethel Beineke Kindall Tibbits; and brother-in-law, Donald Kindall.
Special thanks to Dr. Eric Huerter and the staff at Star Living and Ascend Hospice for their compassionate, loving care over the past year.
In lieu of flowers, Bob’s wishes would be to donate, in his memory, to SRL, Inc., (Save, Rescue, Love that dog!) 503 E. 3rd Street, Minneapolis, KS 67467 (Wolfie and Sugar were rescued from Joyce’s hometown rescue); Christ Community Church, 1100 Kasold Drive, Lawrence, KS 66049 (Joyce’s church family); or Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th Street, Lawrence, KS 66046 (many or our family’s pets have been rescued from LHS). Donations may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary (120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044).
Joyce, our hearts and prayers go out to you, Chad and Melanie. We pray his memory will bring you peace and comfort. Love you.

Our loss is Heaven’s gain, especially if God likes BBQ. Bob’s sense of family and charity was only surpassed by his sense of humor. His smile was definitely contagious. A best friend for sure.
