Richard Cates

Funeral services for Richard Owen Cates, 83, Lawrence will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Burial will follow at Sutton Cemetery in Baldwin City, KS.  He died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Medicalodges Eudora.

He was born on October 2, 1929 in Quenemo, KS the son of Carl William and Edna Fern (Milton) Cates.

He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during the Korean War.

He worked at Farmland Industries for over 30 years in maintenance and carpentry.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, his grandchildren’s activities, reading, and baseball.  He volunteered for 15 years for Visiting Nurses.  He was also the Sexton of Sutton Cemetery for many years.

Richard married Beverly Kring on January 4, 1953 in Vinland, KS.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include daughter, Janice White, and husband, Robert, Lawrence; one son, Rick Cates, and wife, Emily, Lawrence; son-in-law, Robert Lewis, Basehor; seven grandchildren, Brandon Johnson, and wife, Lisa, Chesapeake, VA, Kristina Johnson, Kansas City, MO, Larissa Edmonds, and husband, Brent, Eudora, Bradley Cates, and wife, Miranda, Liberty, MO, Christopher Cates, and wife, Shannon, Lawrence, Robert Lewis, Owen Lewis, both of Basehor; and five great grandchildren, Brianna, Matthew and Conner Johnson, Regan Edmonds, and Alexis Cates.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold “Wayne” Cates; two sisters, Neola Green, Carol Drum; and daughter, Connie Lewis.

The family will greet friends from 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday at the Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses and Hospice Care and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
