Funeral services for Richard L. Copp, 76, Lawrence, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS. Richard passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at LMH Hospital.
Richard was born on August 14, 1947, in Lawrence, KS, the son of Dutch and Annie (Holiday) Copp.
Richard enlisted into the Army in 1964 and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany until his honorable discharge in 1968. One year later he met the love of his life, Linda Hodson. They married in March of 1969. Richard and Linda were just two months shy of celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. That marriage brought the birth of Tashana Sue in 1978. Richard built his home in North Lawrence and lived in that home until his death. Anyone that knew Richard knew that they could find him working and tinkering on cars. His most loved car was his 1957 Chevy Bel air.
Richard was well known to be a plethora of knowledge and wisdom with many things, but cars were his passion. When Richard was not working on cars, he was watching his KU Jayhawks play basketball.
Richard is survived by his wife, Linda of Lawrence, KS. Other survivors include his daughter, Tashana (DJ Glenn) Copp, brothers, Larry (Linda) Copp, Guy Dennis Copp, Melvin Copp, sisters, Sandy (Dale) Mock, Linda (Stan) Buckner, grandchildren, Collin Glenn, Cameron (Sarah) Glenn, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Marvin Copp, Gary Copp, and sister, Vivian Ryan.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 ~ 8:00 p.m., on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS.

Linda and Tashana,
We are sorry to hear of Richard’s passing.
My mom, Gail, loves to tell the story of one Easter morning in the late 70’s when we wanted new bicycles and Shane and I were so upset we didn’t receive them. Then suddenly the doorbell rang and low and behold there sat two new Schwinn bicycles via the Easter Bunny aka Richard. Apparently, the bikes were stored across the street in Richard’s garage for several days prior to Easter. What a great morning!
Personally, I remember many a trip to the farm or to some remote field to harvest 57′ Chevy parts, sand blasting frames in Melvin’s yard, preparing derby cars and sitting on the tractors during the many demolition derbys they participated in, and then later playing league darts with both of them in college. We won the league several times in those years and our championship plaques still hang proudly on the wall of the Harbor Lights!
Richard was generous and kind soul and we will miss him. My Dad could not have had a better friend when I grew up then Richard and family. I suspect he and Richard are up there in the heavens arguing about who should own that old 1956′ GMC truck that they passed back and forth to each other for, literally, decades.
Please know our thoughts are with all of your family and that Richard holds a special place in our heats.
Love,
Gail Johnson, Jami, and Shane Crady

I had the pleasure of living next to Richard the past few years. I’m a car guy myself and we became quick friends. I once needed a grease gun for my mower and figured I would go borrow one from Richard. I knocked on his door and he invited me in to chat for a bit. After I told him what I was looking for he ended up letting me pick out one to keep. Thanks for keeping my wheels spinning Richard!!
