Phyllis Ann Hughes Lawton

Private graveside service for Phyllis Ann Hughes Lawton, 95, of Lawrence will be held at Pioneer Cemetery. She passed away peacefully on March 11, 2017.

Phyllis was born on April 14, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Bowmer and Ruth Hughes. She attended Emporia high school and Emporia State University. She and her husband Keith move to Lawrence in 1946. She was member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. President of University Women’s Club. A 55 year member of PEO Chapter EA, a member of Twentieth Century Club and Chairperson of Downtown Lawrence Clean Up. She served along five University of Kansas Chancellor’s wives in planning and assisting at KU social events.

She is survived by Leslie and Ted Talmon, Chad and Sylvia Lawton, John and Ruth Hughes, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three nieces, Jennifer McGonigle, Erin Mayer and Megan Richardson. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Keith Lawton.

Memorials may be made in her name to KU Endowment Association for the Phyllis Lawton Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
