Mark “Papa” Alan Gwaltney was called to serve with God on August 8, 2017. Mark is reunited in everlasting life with his mother, June Dae Gwaltney, and brother Rick L. Gwaltney. Mark, a proud father of three and grandfather of three, is survived by his wife Tamara (Tami) L. Gwaltney of Lawrence, Kansas and his father, Dwight L. Gwaltney of Hutchinson, Kansas. He is also survived by his daughter Malinda and her husband John O’Hara, and grandchildren Ethan, Isaac, and Elizabeth of Overland Park; his daughter Jenny and her husband Alex Sullivan of Chipita Park, Colorado; and his son Kyle Gwaltney of Lawrence. He is the brother of Julie Weigel and her husband Craig of Manhattan; and Patricia Gwaltney of Dodge City.
Mark was born in Cheyenne, WY on Aug 29, 1956. He was raised on a farm in northern Colorado, and graduated from Hutchinson High School. He attended Hutchinson Community College, and Oklahoma City University where he majored in business and played basketball.
Mark was married to the love of his life, Tami Krehbiel, on December 28, 1979. His affection and love for Tami was present every day, always providing a kiss upon greeting, and always making sure he asked about her day.
He was a successful entrepreneur and businessman, having served as President and Owner of Diamond Everley Roofing of Lawrence, Kansas. An avid outdoors and sports fan, “Papa” was a dedicated KU football and KC Royals fan, and put on some of the best KU football tailgates with his best friends and family. A father figure and role model to many, he will be forever missed by so many within the community.

Tami, Malinda, Jenny, Kyle & Family,
Mark’s passing is painful to so many but no one more than you. You were blessed to have had such a wonderful patriarch who was so full of love & life. God’s speed to Mark and each and everyone one of you.
Where to start … Mark named a stray dog my family took in (Muggs) while we were in high school together in Hutchinson, then it was on to Hutchinson Community College where I watched Mark’s basketball prowess, lots of time spent at “Carl’s Bar”, and back together in Lawrence years later. Mark married a little Mennonite girl (Tami) who I knew from Church. I watched and admired Mark’s business success and enjoyed seeing his family grow. Loved the KU football tailgates too! He will be missed but remembered fondly always. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tami & all of Mark’s extended family & close friends.

So sad and stunned to hear of my friend Mark’s passing. Condolences and prayers to the family.
Recollections have flooded my mind the last couple of days. We go back to Central Junior High, from 1969, and I can still remember the first day Mark arrived there from Wyoming in the eighth grade. I met him in a class….soon after I discovered he played basketball, and suddenly we became teammates, friends, and brothers for the next five years and beyond, culminating in a state championship at Hutch High in 1974.
They were years producing copious memories that could fill up a book, both on and much more….off the court.
Included were hundreds of practices, the games, road trips, school, coaches, teachers, events, our parents, FCA camp in colorado, the vicious pick up games with Rick in the Gwaltney driveway, the parties in every conceivable place, the victories and the defeats.
All lived through laughter and tears.
Right now its more about tears, yet be assured those memories will always be close. Love you Gwalt.
Dear Tami and family,
I don’t know where to begin to described the pain and sadness we too feel from Mark’s passing. How blessed you all were to have had such a special partner in life and father for your children. We will forever remember the good times we all shared. Our thought and prayers go out to you and the Gwaltney family. He will live on in your hearts forever as you cherish your own special memories. May the Lord bless your family and carry you through this difficult and saddest of times.

We are thinking of you and your family.
Tami, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this storm in your lives. This quote has helped me many times the past year and a half since I lost my husband: “When you come out of this storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.” And I like to add, there is a rainbow on the other side! Bless you all…Annette Rayl-Smith
Prayers and condolences , may he rest in peace

Tami and family.
Our thoughts are with you and your family.
I have been blessed to have Malinda as a sister in law and was blessed to know the Gwaltney family. The Gwaltney family treated all of my extended family with respect and such love over the years, even including us and celebrating with us on several special occasions. When you are being hosted by someone in the Gwaltney family, you are treated like a VIP with such love and kindness in ways that are so truly rare and so special. Mark treated my brother like a son, and I am forever grateful to have gotten to know the amazing Gwaltney family legendary level of kindness. I will be praying for you all and wish I could make it easier for you. You are near to my heart and I will think the world of you always!!!!
Gwaltney’s- I am so sorry for your loss. We are praying and keeping all of you in our thoughts during this difficult time. I was deeply sadden when we heard the news. We will miss Mark, his smile and joking nature- (picturing him mowing the yard right now).I have been blessed to know such an amazing, and wonderful family, and be part of your lives.

Tammi – You & Mark have been a staple in the book of parties I’ve Disc Jockeyed for from the Frankarostas to the 74 ‘ HHS Reunions to the weddings . Fun people with great personalities who would enjoy themselves and showed love for each other will stick in my mind forever. Mark was a cool, even tempered guy, who was a fantastic person to know from high school through adulthood. Someone I always found a pleasure to reacquaint myself with after some time had pasted. My memories, blessings and prayers are with you and your family.

My dear cousin Tami,
There are no words to convey the sorrow I feel for you, Malinda, Jenny, and Kyle. To loose Mark so suddenly is hard to fathom. He was so fun loving and full of life. I will treasure my memories of him on the farm, and at all the family gatherings. I pray that you can take comfort in knowing God has promised we will see him again. I pray for God’s peace and understanding. Proverbs 3:5 & 6.
