Marilyn Dee Good

Marilyn Dee Good was born on October 5, 1936 in Lawrence, Ks.   Recently hospitalized at St. Luke’s for routine octogenarian issues she and the Lord decided to do a permanent check-out.  After reciting the “Lord’s Prayer” and then the “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” chant, she transitioned to heaven on April 7, 2023 surrounded by all of her family.

Marilyn spent her life in Douglas County, growing up on a farm south of Lawrence with her parents, Elmer and Dorothy (Breithaupt) Wintermantel and younger brother Charles.  She attended one room schools, Range Line and Excelsior/Exline, later graduating from Baldwin High School.

In 1952 she met Don Bachelor at the Overbrook fair and they were married on November 27, 1954.  They moved to Lawrence where they raised their three kids Joan, David and saving the best for last, Susan.  They later divorced and she married Max Good in 1974.

Putting her efficient organizational and management skills to work, Marilyn spent 33 years working for Neil McCaskey at Maupintour Travel Agency.  Her position allowed her to enjoy multiple international trips to numerous countries and continents.

She was a member of the EHU (Extension Homemakers Unit), Worden United Methodist 4H as a child and sang in her high school and Lawrence church choir.

Marilyn was known by all for her hospitable spirit, sense of humor and incredible cooking!  Hosting large family gatherings or lunch for a few, always seemed effortless.  In the rare instances there was anything leftover, she sent you home with a carryout bag for later.  Her potato salad was famous! While she did not keep the recipe a secret, no one has been able to master her artful rendition of the family favorite (except her daughters) 😊.  Everyone knew her bowl at the church potlucks and if you were a first timer, word trickled down the line to “get some of Marilyn’s potato salad”.

If she wasn’t cooking you might find her at the sewing machine creating clothes, Halloween costumes, pillows, or making a gift for others.  She even helped kids with sewing lessons.  She loved painting, arts and crafts or decorating her home. On nice evenings you might also find her fishing with family at the pond or working in her vegetable or flower garden.

She loved attending all of her grandkids events whether it be, drill team, marching band, softball, baseball, basketball or soccer. She loved KU basketball, Kansas City Royals and the Chiefs.

Preceding her in death are her parents Elmer and Dorothy, husbands Donald and Max, brother Charles and son David.

She is survived by daughters, Joan McNeal (Patrick) of Overland Park KS and Susan Kruger (Robert) of Baldwin City KS. Five grandchildren, Emily Kline (Andy), Matthew McNeal (Courtney Smith), Christopher Bachelor, Jedidiah Kruger and Cole Kruger (Kylee) and 4 great grandchildren: Harrison and Everett Kline, Wyatt Bremer, and Kohen Kruger.

The family will have a visitation at Worden Cornerstone Church, Thursday, April 20th from 6 to 8 pm and celebration of Marilyn will be Friday, April 21st at 10:00 am

If you want to give to her memorial donations will go to the Worden Cornerstone Church.

Marilyn welcomed our family into the church and community with her hospitality and that beautiful smile. She mentored one of our daughters in a sewing project for school and always had a great sense of humor. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. Sending love and praying for your family

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady.. Marilyn was always one of my favorites. She definitely had a gift of making you feel right at home. I’m pretty sure Noah thought of her as
his other grandma! Prayers for your family.

Marilyn hired me at Maupintour and I was lucky enough to work for her for several years and then other positions there for many more years. Marilyn always had a smile and she loved to keep us on our toes! So blessed to have known and loved her! You’ve earned your heavenly reward! Hugs to all of her family!

Oh sweet, funny Marilyn. May the peace of Christ surround your beautiful family while you are enjoying your new home in heaven. I’m sure she is making that potato salad while singing and tweaking a few angel wings with her sewing! Until we all meet again!

Marilyn was a smiling bubbly powerhouse to work alongside. My 2 years working with her at Maupintour are some of my fondest memories. Hugs and gum chewing to all her family.

I have known Marilyn since 1968. I worked with her and Tom Maupin and Neil MeCaskey for 26 years. I have only great memories of her and both of her husbands and of course Joanie. We had a wonderful time in New Orleans on our wonderful Christmas trip in 1969. Most recently, I have met her at many farm auctions that she and the Worden Church Ladies served lunch for. My regrets for the loss of a life well lived.
    With much Love,
    David & Judy Stutenroth

Bob and i are so sorry. From the times I met your mom she was always laughing and so fun to be around. Be at peace that she is still with you and watching over her all her precious “grandbabies”

Hugs and prayers to Marilyn’s family. Don (Schwartz) and I were so excited when “kids” moved onto the farm next to ours. When Marilyn and Don got their driver’s licenses, Marilyn, Charles, Don and I would carpool to high school. The ride was just long enough for lots of stories and laughs. It was fun visiting with Marilyn, still full of joy and humor, when we came back to Baldwin for family visits.
May your good memories rise to the top.
    Joanne (Schwartz) and Don Hastings
