Margaret M. Middleton

Margaret M. Middleton, 97, Lawrence, KS, passed away Monday, May 18, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society of Olathe.

Margaret was born on June 12, 1922 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Thomas and Katherine (Ryan) Neely.

She moved to Lawrence in 1983.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 68 plus years, unit president and district officer. Departmental Chapeau of the Eight and Forty, a den mother for Boy Scouts, PTA President in Chicago and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence.

She was a homemaker, secretary for the Chicago School Board and owner of Morning Star Pet Care for 20 years.

She married John M. Middleton, Sr. on August 29, 1942 in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death in 1981. Son John Middleton, Daughters Peggy Middleton and Kathy Middleton Preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Marianne Middleton, Lawrence; sons, James Middleton, Olathe, Thomas Middleton, Lawrence; seven grandchildren, Katie (Andrew) Gerhardt, Patrick (Amber) Middleton, William Middleton, Hannah Middleton, Abigail Middleton, Beth Middleton, Adam Middleton; and 6 great grandchildren, Bailey, Aron, Owen Gerhardt, Rozzie and Rowen Middleton, Cassandra Middleton. .

The family suggests memorials in her name to American Legion Auxiliary Dorsey Liberty Post #14 and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

    Marianne–we are so very sorry for your loss. We just found out from Len and Pat that your mom passed. (6/14/2020) She was so welcoming to new members at the legion. Such a friendly lady to all. She will be very sorely missed by all.

    Your Mother was a beautiful, shining example of dedication to her country and all that being a responsible citizen is all about! I’m sure she was a top-notch Mom as well. I have missed her every time we’ve had an Auxiliary meeting and she wasn’t able to come. We will all continue to miss her and her bright and inspiring personality!
