Leonard H. Monroe

Funeral services for Leonard H. Monroe, 86, of Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at St. Luke AME Church in Lawrence. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. He passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at his home.

Leonard was born September 6, 1931 in Lawrence, KS, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Watts) Monroe.

Leonard served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for 23 years, during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Okinawa, Europe, Vietnam, and later New Mexico, where he met his future wife, Jackie (Kilgore). He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Leonard moved back home to Lawrence, and served as the Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance for the City of Lawrence for 23 years, until he retired in 2000.

He was an active member of the St. Luke AME Church and was member of Western Star Masonic Lodge #1. He was also the president of the Elsie Randolph Scholarship fund.

Survivors include: six children — Michael Leonard Monroe (Jerlyn) Lawrence, KS; LeAnette E. Sutter (William) Overland Park, KS; Linda E. Monroe, Washington, D.C.; Darryl R. Monroe, Atlanta, GA; Doria N. Hamm (Brandon) Overland Park, KS; Maria R. Monroe, Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren — Abby, Olivia, Caitlin, Christian, Haley, Luke, Evonna, Sebastian, Braxton; one great-grandson; one sister — Mary Winborn, Detroit, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice, Levita, and Edna, and three brothers, William, Raymond, and Waldo “Bud”.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to St. Luke AME Church and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

    Sorry to hear the passing of Uncle Leonard Monroe. Uncle Leonard Monroe was great family man and he loves everyone in the family and the family love Uncle Leonard so truly. Carolyn and I were very happy and bless, when Uncle Leonard came to our Army retirement ceremony and this made this occasion very special. Made God blesses Aunt Jackie and family.     Remembering how much I loved Leonard and how much he will be missed immensely by everyone who knew him. He was extremely kind and considerate. A very loving person who loved the Lord and his country and family. His voice was a gift that God gave him to show us how to praise him. He was an extreme joy to be around and I loved to hug him. I hope his family will be blessed and he will rest in peace.

    Really sad to hear about the demise of your father Maria. I read about him and he lived a wonderful life. Though nothing in the world can compensate the loss but there is something to cherish that he lived such a wonderful life.
    I missed meeting him during my stay in Lawrence and would have loved to meet such a wonderful human being.

    So sorry for your loss. Your dad was such a sweet man. At the time he lived at Prairie Commons , I was the manager. He wanted to make sure he had everything right.
