June Allene Morton

A lifetime Lawrencian, June Allene (Lobb) Morton, age 72, passed peacefully at home on Monday, February 1, 2021. Memorial visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2021 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family will have a time of sharing remembrances at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

June enjoyed a full life treasuring time with family and friends. She loved cooking, hosting Superbowl and Halloween, going on road trips, vacationing in Branson, and spoiling her children, grandchildren, pets, and grandpets.

June was born to Henry Allen Lobb and Ruby Lorraine (Bracken) Lobb on June 7, 1948. She married Harry Lee Morton May 25, 1966, who preceded her in death May 19, 2010.

June was a very determined woman, and after marriage she worked to complete her Lawrence High School diploma stating that she wanted to be a good role model to her daughters. She was a homeroom mother during her daughters’ elementary years and worked at the family business Lobb Liquor, later Anderson-Morton Liquor. When the liquor store was sold, June worked as a supervisor/lead at Davol, Inc. and after that company moved, she obtained a secretarial degree and worked at the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Douglas County Treasurer’s Office, and the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department where she retired in 2015.

Survivors include one sister, Joan (Lobb) Anderson; daughter Cindy (Morton) Nau and husband Tom; daughter Angie (Morton) Nordhus and husband Reese; three grandchildren—Jessica, Christopher, and Katelyn Nau, and her beloved Cocker Spaniel. Trixie.

Memorial contributions may be made in June’s name to Douglas County Senior Services or Meals on Wheels of Lawrence (www.lawrencemow.org) and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

    Cindy & Angie,
My heart goes out to you. I understand the pain you feel. She is watching over you all now in a way she couldn’t before. This picture of her shows that tiny gleam in her eye. She loved fiercely, and had the most wonderful sense of humor. It was always a pleasure to have a chat with her. You are all in our prayers.

How do you say good bye to a most wonderful mom any adopted son could hope for? She was always there with a sound piece of advice or words of encouragement. Growing up out of childhood is hard, but you made it much easier. Thanks for making me part of the family. I will miss your smile and laugh.

Allene, the name I knew her by, has always been very special to me. I’ve known her all my life, and oh, all the memories! I have so many of them to cherish.
We spent some summertime, and every Christmas during our childhood, together.
I have to admit, nobody was safe when we got together. We seemed to bring out the mischief in each other. There wasn’t any ornery thing we wouldnt do, and no idea we didn’t think up.
I have so many very special memories of my beloved cousin.
    I’ll miss you Allene.

    Dear Cindy and Angie,
My thoughts and love are with you and your families. Take all the time you need to grieve, hold each other, and relish is all the good and funny memories. You both took such good care of your mother which allowed her to stay in her home. I know this was incredibly important to June. Take it slow, rest, sleep, and take good care. Have you covered until you return to work.

    Dear Angie and Cindy,
I’m so sad to hear of June’s passing. She was a kind, loving person. I met her shortly after she married cousin Harry and really liked her from the very first. She was always fun to be around at the family reunions; smiling, witty, easy to talk with, and you could tell that she loved the family. We love her, too. It’s obvious that she was a wonderful mom, raising two wonderful daughters. Cherish all those presidiums memories.
    Love you,
    Glenda

    Angie,
I am so sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. I remember her fondly. The one memory of her that sticks out the most is when we had a Halloween party at your house. She dressed up like a witch, took us on a hay rack ride, roasted hotdogs and marshmallows outside on an open fire. I can’t believe she put up with all of us giggling girls all night long. She made it so fun for us.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

    Hugs,
    Laura Mullin – Rogers
