John Charles Scafe

Funeral services for John Charles Scafe, 90, Lawrence will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2018 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, KS. He passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
John was born February 27, 1928 in Alba, MO, the son of Charles Earnest and Alice (Burnsides) Scafe.

He joined the Army out of high school and became one of the youngest officers in the Army at the age of 18. He served in Japan and upon returning to the United States, met his future wife, Perdita. They were married December 27, 1949 in Kansas City, KS. He went on to college and was called back into the Army and was sent to Germany and that’s where they had their first child. Upon returning to the states he taught for three years. He then became a Diplomat for the United States Information Service and lived in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Bolivia, Nigeria, and Portugal. John retired January 1, 1988 then he and Perdy moved to Strafford, MO where he loved raising bees, gardening and bowling. They later moved to Lawrence.

Survivors include his wife, Perdita; their three children, Pamela (Jonathan) Jackson, Becky (Gordon) Chappell, Chris (Sharon) Scafe; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one brother, Myron (Marilyn) Scafe. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cynthia Scafe; and one son, Philip Scafe.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service from 1 – 2 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
