A Memorial Mass for Joan T. (Skinner) Kampschroeder, 75, of Lawrence, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Joan passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born on April 13, 1947, Joan was the daughter of Dr. John Thomas and Catherine Agnes (Luby) Skinner.
A 1965 graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Missouri, she attended and graduated with an Education Degree from the University of Kansas in 1969. She taught for many years at the Giving Tree Preschool, St. John Catholic School, and Corpus Christi Catholic School.
Joan married Halley Kampschroeder on June 7, 1969 at Visitation Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
She is survived by her husband and their three daughters, Kristin (John) Kerrigan, Megan (Brit) Laurent, and Katy (John) True; grandchildren Owen and Conor Kerrigan, Elias and Halley Laurent, and Isaiah, Stella, Naomi, and Lucy True; her sister, Sharon Radovich; her brother-in-law, Robert Wynne; her sister-in-law, Sylvia Martin; and many nieces and nephews. She will be profoundly missed by all of her family and many close friends.
Joan took great joy in watching her three daughters play sports in high school and college and, in time, cheering for her grandchildren in their many sporting activities. She enjoyed traveling and spending time outdoors at Lakeview, just north of Lawrence. Joan was a lifelong member of the KU Alumni Association, and she loved watching sports, especially the Jayhawks.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James Richard Skinner and John Thomas Skinner; and a sister, Mary Catherine Wynne.
Joan’s family wishes to express gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Center and the entire staff of Hospice – Visiting Nurses Association of Lawrence.
Memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s name to Corpus Christi Catholic School or to St. John’s Catholic School and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I m so saddened to hear of Joan’s passing. She was always an inspiration to me because of her grace and welcoming spirit. She and Halley made a remarkable team and, in turn, reared three remarkable daughters. Her influence and love will live on in all of them, as it will in all who knew her.
My heart breaks for Halley and all of his family. I never saw Joani when she wasn’t smiling. What a wonderful spirit she had. I’m sure she touched the lives of the many students she taught. Prayers for comfort for all of you.

We have many fond memories of being with Joan and Halley at our daughters’ sporting activities at LHS and beyond. Her love and support for her children and grandchildren was wonderful. My first year of teaching 1st Grade at Corpus Christi with Joanie was a gift from God. Her fun, loving spirit will remain with all who knew her. Blessings to all who are mourning her passing.
Dear Halley, Kristin, Megan, and Katy we are so sorry for your loss. Joanie is one of the most deferential people we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Anytime either of us would see her, she would ask about our family and say the kindness things. And, speaking of family, she would burst into a big smile when giving us an update on her amazing daughters and their families. She will always be remembered by us as a wonderfully kind and caring person. Our hearts go out to you.
