Jerry William Kunkel

Jerry William Kunkel, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrence, Kansas on Monday, March 6, 2023 at the age of 78.

Jerry was born in Mansfield, Ohio to William and Leva (Calhoon) Kunkel. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1968 and was an instructor at Findlay College from 1968-1969. Jerry accepted a faculty position in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1969, serving as professor from 1969 – 2006, and chair from 1995-2003. He retired from the university in 2006.

Jerry was a beloved teacher, avid artist, and passionate collector. His talent and knowledge will live on in the students and artists he inspired, mentored, and befriended throughout his life. Largely known for his narrative style of painting, he leaves behind decades of work. He is represented by Robischon Gallery in Denver, Colorado and Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents William and Leva Kunkel. He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Jarnot, his devoted daughter, Adrianne (Michael Dennis) Kunkel, and a host of family and friends.
