James Smith

Funeral services for James R. Smith, 90, Lawrence will be held 10 am Friday, January 29, 2010 at Southside Church of Christ in Lawrence.  Military Honors and burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.  He died Monday, January 25, 2010 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

He was born November 8, 1919 in Milan, Missouri the son of Lee C. and Gladys M. (Hennen) Smith.

He worked for Hercules as a carpenter.  He also served his country in the Army during World War II.  He was a member of the American Legion, Dorsey-Liberty Post #14.

He married Rose W. Owen on November 12, 1949 in Lawrence, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on April 7, 2002

Survivors include; one sister, Lorain Owen, Gladstone, MO; one brother, Paul Smith, Weatherby, MO; four grandchildren, Stephen MacDougall, Frederick, CO, Patricia Lyons, Baldwin City, KS, Mike Wood, Lansing, KS, Bradley Wood, Shawnee, KS; six great grandchildren and two step-sons, Charles Wood, Desert Hot Springs, CA, Marvin Wood, Lenexa, KS  He was preceded in death by one sister, Madeline Lacousiere; one brother, Albert Smith; one grandson, Greg Wood and two twin great grandson’s, Matthew and Trevor;  one step-son, Ralph MacDougall.

The family will greet friends 9 am Friday at the Southside Church of Christ until service time.

The family suggests memorials in his name to Christian Family Services or Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain mortuary.

    Staff at the Lawrence Hearing Aid Center sends our deepest sympathy. Mr. Smith was very special to us.
