A Celebration of Life for James “Jim” V. Hoover, 76, Eudora will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora. There will be a reception to follow the service at the church. A private family inurnment will be held at a later time at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. He passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018 surrounded by his family.
Jim was born December 11, 1941 the son of Kelvin Vincent and Helen Elizabeth (Benson) Hoover. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1959. He worked at Kaw Valley State Bank for 55 years and was President of Kaw Valley State Bank for 35 years. He considered his employees and many of his customers an extension of his family and treated all of them as such.
Jim served on the city council and was the Mayor of Eudora for more than three decades, often taking calls and answering “friendly” questions at his own home at all hours of the day. He was a member of the CPA Picnic Association, and many of his friends have fond memories of him working the pop stand during the annual picnic.
He loved hot rod cars and the faster they ran the better. He passed his love for racing on to his son Jimmy, and he spent many years at the motor cross track watching Jimmy race and win. Later he would spend many more years at ball parks with his son Jason and the KVB Sidewinders softball team sharing in their many wins and treating the team like part of his family. An extremely hard worker, Jim hated being idle and was known for his willingness to help anyone and only expected a thank you in return.
He was incredibly proud of his grandchildren and had a great hand in raising them. He loved spending time with his family above all else and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s many activities, making an effort to come to many concerts, games, and horse shows. He spoiled his family, especially his grandchildren, and gave generously behind the scenes in many ways that even his family will never know about. Jim had a larger than life personality and there will never be another husband, dad, grandpa, or friend like Jim.
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years Carole, Eudora, KS. Other survivors include two sons, Jimmy (Julie) Hoover of (Louisburg), KS, Jason (Lindsey) Hoover of Eudora, KS; his sister, Dr. Eileen (Dr. Walter) Kintsch of Boulder, CO; and his most beloved grandchildren, Grace, Payton, and Colby.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Eudora Schools Foundation and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Such an iconic figure in our town. It was a right of passage in our family for my parents to say, “Let’s go see Jim Hoover about us co-signing for a loan” any time us kids wanted to get our first vehicles. Our condolences to Carol & family. Long time Eudora residents should pay “Thanks” to Kelvin, Jim & the whole Hoover family for much of the positive Eudora development over the last few decades. Their efforts thru the years have made for a “better Eudora”.
What a wonderful tribute to a life well-lived. Sincere condolences to the entire Hoover family. His mark on the community will not soon be matched.
When a living, yet larger than life, force of positive energy and goodwill, suddenly leaves us mere mortals with no warning or preparation, we are left with gaping holes in our heads and hearts. How can we continue on with out him? I, for one, will close my eyes and hear his voice, his chuckle and picture a tall man smiling down at me and will carry on, just as he would want me to. Good grief, Jim, you will be/already are severely missed.
God Bless the Family and all of the many Friends!

I loved this man. Treated me like a son. Many of dollars spent on me playing softball. Many a breakfast together before leaving town. Not once would he allow me to buy. First time I met Jim, he tossed me a set of car keys, said come on let’s take this one for a ride. You will be missed. Thoughts and prayers to the Family. I love you all.

Carol,
I moved to Lawrence in 1955, to 2138 Vermont st. and Jim was the first kid I met. Jim had a bike & I didn’t. So Jim road on the handle bars and I peddled us all over Lawrence .I will always have great memories of those times. It is with great sorrow to hear of Jim’s passing. God be with you and your family at this time of sorrow.
Words cannot express how much I’m going to miss my Uncle Jim. Living halfway across the country I would not get to see the Hoover family as much as I would have liked but was fortunate enough to get out to Eudora this past summer, staying with Aunt Carole and Uncle Jim. He was a man who spoke his mind for sure but his heart…to know that heart…was to truly know Jim Hoover.

I fondly remember during my years in Eudora stopping by the bank to visit with Jim. Jim was the first real city administrator of Eudora. I enjoyed his good humor and constant advice to spend less money. I also thrived from his love of Eudora. Any conversation with Jim left me with a better understanding of the past that was informing our future. My sincere condolences to the family who has lost a hero and a community who has lost a champion.

Jim was such a happy, fun and welcoming presence at the White Fox Manor barn — at shows and in the evenings while the girls were all riding. You could tell how proud he was to have the family together in one place with the horses. The entire extended barn family will miss Jim so much. And our hearts go out to Jimmy, Julie and the entire Hoover family.
I am so sorry to hear about Jim’s passing, I have memories of going to the bank with my grandma, Pearl Hadl, and he would give her a hard time every time he saw her, she would always make sure to say hi to him when he was there and he always made me laugh, my heart goes out to you in these sad times but he will always be with you and would want you to celebrate his life
