Jacquelyn Kay Miller Wertzberger, a remarkable woman of strength, talent, and unwavering love, passed away at 7:09pm on March 22, 2024, at the age of 85, at her home with her children by her side. Born on July 9, 1938, in Webb City, Missouri, she was the cherished only child of Robert Joseph and Eva Belle Miller.

Kay’s journey was one marked by resilience, passion, and boundless dedication to her family and her diverse interests. After graduating with honors from Leavenworth High School in 1956, she pursued her dreams at the University of Kansas, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy in 1960.

Following her graduation, Kay embarked on a fulfilling career in healthcare, touching countless lives with her compassion and expertise. She dedicated herself to serving others at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, and later at the Kansas City Veterans Hospital, where her commitment to patient care left a lasting impact.

In 1961, Kay married John Wertzberger, and together they began a beautiful journey filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Their family grew with the adoption of their son, Kurt Joseph Wertzberger, in 1966, followed by the joyous arrival of their two biological children, Kirsten Kay Wertzberger in 1967 and Karl Hudson Wertzberger in 1972.

Following her divorce from John in 1982, she embarked on a new chapter, finding success and fulfillment by going back to the University of Kansas and receiving a second degree, a BA of Interior Design. After her time in design, she returned to the world of real estate. Joining Stephens Real Estate in Lawrence, Kansas, Kay flourished in her role, eventually serving as the Executive Vice President of the Lawrence Board of Realtors from 1997 through 2009.

Beyond her professional achievements, Kay was a woman of many talents and passions. An avid golfer and tennis player, she found joy and camaraderie on the greens and courts. In 1978, she proudly served as the Interim Women’s Golf Coach at the University of Kansas, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of young athletes.

Kay’s creative spirit knew no bounds, as she found solace and expression through her oil paintings, showcasing her talent and imagination to all who beheld her work. Yet, above all, Kay treasured her time spent with her beloved grandchildren, Ainsley Krug, Payton Krug, Teagan Wertzberger, and John Wertzberger.

Kay is survived by her loving children, Kirsten Krug (husband; Robin Krug), Karl Wertzberger (wife; Jeni Wertzberger) and her amazing grandchildren; Ainsley Krug, Payton Krug, Teagan Wertzberger, John Wertzberger, Kayla Diaz and Kathryn Hobbs.

Though she may no longer walk beside us, Kay’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know and love her. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love she so generously shared with the world.

My sincerest condolences to Kay’s family. I knew her from my Physical Therapy days at the KU Medical Center. She was at the Veteran’s
Hospital when I did a preceptorship there. She was a bright light for many of the patients there. Kay was also one of the first people I connected
with in Lawrence when we moved here in the very early 80s. Her caring was remarkable.

Sending my most sincere condolences to Kay’s family. She was one of my favorite customers at the bank. When I was a teller there, I worked the drive thru. She always preferred the second drive thru window. Always greeted me by name with her beautiful smile. She would genuinely ask me how my day was going. I always appreciated her kindness.
