He was one of my regulars at Cellar Door; always got the Gateau Breton and a coffee. I’ll miss seeing him around, but I I’m happy he went doing the things he enjoyed, drinking coffee and ripping some cigs. What a journey he had in this world.
Like Brian here, Jack was a regular at our coffee shop. He always stopped to say hello whether at the shop or on the downtown street. He was very enthusiastic talking about his music and music composition. The album of his he always walked around with was ‘Zettai by Log Rhythm 3’ if you want to give it a listen and have a glance into his life. Rest in peace, Jack; you were one of the truest embodiments of what makes this town of ours in Kansas special.
Going to miss Jack calling me San Diego every morning. His constant smile and will to keep going inspired me and I’m sure did with many others. Let his spirit be a reminder to be kind to one another. Rest in peace sir.
I also work at cellar, but I didn’t get to interact with Jack much face-to-face because I’m a baker. The very brief interactions we did have always made me smile, I will miss seeing him walk home at the same time I would. I wish I had taken the time to sit down with him and hear his stories.
I met Jack at the Bourgeois Pig on Mass Street several years ago. We struck up a conversation about his CD’s while we both sat outside, enjoying the patio and watching people pass by. He told me all about his music, travels, and life. I wish now I remembered more of the details he shared. Still, his passion for his music was clear. I walked away that day with 2 CDs and a new friend. In the 3 years since, we’ve seen each other countless times. Every time we ambled by each other, he always said hello and brought a smile to my face. Downtown Lawrence won’t quite be the same without him. Here’s hoping he’s back playing jazz now like he used to be. I’ll be playing Zettai in the car today in tribute.
I always stopped to chat with Jack when I saw him around. I loved listening to his stories of living in Japan in the 90s and proudly purchased all 4 of his albums which he cleverly raised the price on each time I talked to him. He never remembered me initially, but always remembered after we got to talking. I really will miss running into you downtown, Jack… I’m so glad I took time to get to know you.
Jack was a dear friend for many years and I count myself lucky to have shared a cuppa with him in 2025. Please let us find ways to have more of his compositions heard and honor the brilliance and resilience with which he walked our streets.
Let me be as joyful should I last as long.
I would run into Jack downtown all the time! He always had the best attitude and could talk about anything. I complimented his hair cut one time and after that he’d always ask me if I remembered the word I used to describe his hair cause he couldn’t ever remember. Wish I would’ve bought a CD then but I’m eating a financier at cellar door for him today.
