Ione Sells

Funeral service for Ione L. Sells, 85, Lawrence will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Southside Church of Christ in Lawrence.  Graveside services will be held 5:00 p.m., Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, Kansas.  She was a resident of Lawrence since 1987.

She died on July 17, 2009 at KU Med Center.

She was born on October 26, 1923 in Axtel, KS the daughter of Oliver C. and Nina Bridges Conable.

Mrs. Sells was a member and was very involved in the Southside Church of Christ and Big Brothers and Big Sisters, where she was currently working with Tony.  She was a volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.  She was also a member of Bridge and stitching Clubs in Lawrence.  She was a member of the Women’s ministry at the Douglas County Jail and the Welcome Club of Lawrence. She also boarded a number of KU students for several years and was a Avon Representative for many years she then retired. 

She married Lee F. Sells on October 30, 1943 in Seneca, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on March 22, 1989.

Survivors include one son, Roger F., WaKeeney, KS; four sisters; Marjorie Willyard, June Kabriel, Joyce Duryea, Patty Letter; one son-in-law, Steven Walker, Chillicothe, MO; seven grandchildren, Roger Jr. and Lee Sells, Mindie Killmayer, Kim Bloss, Kelly Mason, Kevin Walker and Kerri Mason; 14 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Terry Lee Walker, on June 26, 2009 and one sister, Betty.

Visitation will from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Southside Church of Christ or Big Brothers and Big Sisters and sent in care of the mortuary.
