Harvey Leroy “Roy” Murphy

Funeral services for Harvey Leroy “Roy” Murphy, 83, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Connect Church in Lawrence. Graveside service with full military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. He passed away Monday evening, February 12, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Harvey was born December 20, 1934 in Grantville, KS the son of Harvey K. and Ethel Jamison Murphy.

He married Barbara Hurd on January 6, 1957 in Burlingame, CA. She survives of the home. Other survivors include, brother-in-law, Sam Brubaker. He also leaves behind two daughters, Pamela Heath (Tom), Kathi Gomel; five grandchildren, Joshua Heath, Chris Heath (Ellie), Aaron Kraemer (Jess), Travis Gomel and Trisha Gomel; as well as; six great grandchildren. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.

His mother, Ethel Jamison, and his sisters, Ruth Brubaker, Veta Atland and Mildred Shubkagel all passed before him.

He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1953. He attended Kansas University for one year on a track & Field Scholarship. He then joined the U.S. Navy and after a 26-year career he retired as a 3rd Force Master Chief of the U.S. Navy. Upon retiring, he and his family returned to Lawrence and worked for Winnelson for many years.

He was well known for his creating stain glass pictures. He was a member of the Lawrence Wesleyan Church (Connect Church) where he served as a trustee for many years. He volunteered and served in many compacities. He enjoyed the many bible studies he belonged to and loved working outdoors.

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

    Duane and I were so sorry to hear about Harvey’s death. We both always enjoyed seeing and talking to him at the Art and Craft Shows as well as at church. He was a good friend and will be truly missed. Our prayers are with all of you.

    What a Blessing to cross paths with Harvey Murphy! His genuine, radiant smile reflected his warm and caring heart. He was such a servant and warrior for his Creator.     Murph was a real blessing to those who were so privileged as to have met him. He taught me what it meant when the Scripture says God is love. And although he’s with the Father now and he will be missed by many, we know with the certainty that he is where he belongs.
