A Memorial service for Harry Eugene Talley, 86, Lawrence will be 1 p.m., Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery on the KU campus. He died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
Harry was born August 8, 1924 in Blue Springs, MO, the son of Thomas M. and Gladys Downing Talley.
He was a Sergeant in the US Air Corps during WWII.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Rockhurst College in 1949, a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Kansas in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Kansas in 1954.
He was a member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Allentown, PA from 1954 – 1964. From 1962 – 1964 he was a visiting professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
1964 to 1970 he was Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Kansas.
In 1970 he became Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Kansas. He retired in 1989.
The Engineering Department established the Harry Talley Excellence in Teaching Award in his honor. The award is presented to an outstanding faculty member voted on by graduating seniors.
He belonged to ETA KAPPA NU and TAU BETA PI.
He volunteered for the University of Kansas Audio Reader and the Lawrence Meals on Wheels. He attended the First Southern Baptist Church.
Harry married Marjorie L. Green on January 8, 1944 in Kansas City, KS. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by a son, Dennis E. Talley (Sally), Lawrence, KS; daughter, Susan E. Guthrie, Austin, TX and five grandchildren: Charlotte Talley, Ann Talley Hamidi (Ali), Nicholas Talley, Rebekah Guthrie Kester (Gabe), Andrew Guthrie (Amanda), seven great-grandchildren and two nieces Carol and Linda Talley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Bill.
Memorials in his name may be made to: Audio Reader or Meals on Wheels and sent in care of the mortuary.

We wish we could be there with you but J is not able to travel. Our hearts and spirits will be with you during your time of mourning. Harry, I will always think of you when I clean the top of my refrigerator.

I am saddened by the news that Harry passed but I am a better person having known him. Harry was always most kind to me, as a child, a teenager and as an adult. KU Basketball games were not the same if Harry wasn’t sitting right there next to me! He will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with Marge and the family.

Susie and I will deeply miss Harry. I met Harry, 46 years ago, as a Junior EE student taking one of the first courses he taught at KU. Harry was my teacher, PhD thesis advisor and a lifelong friend. Harry’s guidance profoundly shaped the course of our lives. We continue to be thankful and honored to have known Harry.

He was a great teacher as I had him in 1984-5 and I was very impressed by him and his knowledge. A great man will be missed and sorry I did not hear of of sooner.
