Memorial services for Gloria Sterling, 78, Lawrence will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center (917 Highland Drive). She died March 1, 2009 at her home.
She was born July 5, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York the daughter of Albert and Mollie (Tiger) Wolfson.
She received her undergraduate degree from Hunter College in New York and her master’s degree from the University of Kansas. She began her career in the New York City Public Schools in Elementary Education. In 1969, the family moved to Lawrence, where she worked in the Topeka Public Schools and finished her career as a Guidance
Counselor.
She was a longtime volunteer at Audio Reader and a part of the Lawrence Jewish Community Center for 40 years.
She married Stanley J. Sterling on December 28, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Judi Gitel of Lawrence; Abbie Frank and her husband, Mark of St. Louis, Missouri; son, Adam Sterling and his wife, Veerle Coignez of Falls Church, VA; five grandchildren, Rachel Gitel of Springfield, MO; Jason Gitel of St. Louis, MO; Elka and Bram Sterling of Falls Church, VA and Micah Frank of
St. Louis, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Enid Wolfson.
The family suggests memorials in her name to Audio Reader and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
A reception will follow the service at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center.
