Freida May McGee

Freida May McGee, born June 7, 1925, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Born and raised in rural Arkansas, Freida moved after graduating from high school to North Carolina where she met and fell in love with Nathan Gerald “Jerry” McGee. After he returned from serving in Europe during World War II, they married in Lawrence, Kansas on October 11, 1945 and were blessed with two daughters and 62 years together. They lived in Lawrence until moving to Bonner Springs in 1967. After Jerry’s death, she moved to Eudora where she was a long-time member of the Church of Christ. Committed to her faith and family, Freida radiated a kindness and sweetness of disposition spiced with just enough playful sassiness to make her a delight to know. Few could resist hugging her by their second greeting and all departed smiling after an encounter with her.

Freida was preceded in death by husband Jerry, parents George and Nettie Baker, sister Hazel Calvert, and brother Ancil Baker. She is survived by daughter Judy McPhie of Kamiah, ID and husband Jack; daughter Jan Missildine of Clearwater, FL and husband Carl; granddaughter Laurie Barrett and husband Mike and great-grandchildren Zach and wife Amanda, Sydney, and Savannah; granddaughter Kathy Taylor and husband Steve and great-grandchildren Thomas and Nathan. Other survivors include sister Mary Reeves of Lawrence, KS and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 West 13th Street in Lawrence followed by interment at the Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family will greet friends from 1 to 2 pm before the service.
