Frances Jean Girty

Frances Jean Girty (Scott), 83, will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. ~ 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial Services for Frances Jean Girty (Scott), 83, will be held Wednesday, March 03, at the Lawrence Indian United Methodist Church, Viewing will be from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, with dinner from 5:30 – 6:30 pm and service from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Funeral Service and Burial will be on Friday, March 5, 2021, 1:00 pm, at the Springfield Indian United Methodist Church southeast of Okemah, Oklahoma.

Burial will be directly after the funeral with internment at the Yarholar – Scott Family Cemetery @ 3 miles north of the Springfield UMC under the direction of Parks Funeral Home.

Frances was born at home in rural Okfuskee County, southeast of Okemah, OK and died Sunday, February 28th, at Kansas City, Kansas. Her parents were the Rev. Ellis Scott and Susie Scott (Looney). Frances Scott is survived by her children, Gary Girty and wife Loa (Piedmont, OK), Stephen Girty, (Lawrence, KS), and daughter Kerry Cuny (Girty) & husband Richard (Okemah, OK).

Grandchildren include Logan Girty (Tahlequah, OK), Garrett Girty and wife Cheryl (Yukon, OK), Christopher Bowers (Camp Pendleton, CA), Walker Girty (Piedmont, OK), Aarron Cuny (Rapid City, SD) and Brenden Cuny (Mesa, AZ). One great grandchild: Jaelyn Nicole Girty (Tahlequah, OK).
Brothers-In-Law include Rufus Girty and wife Linda (Garland, TX), George Girty and wife Peggy (Tahlequah, OK). Sisters-In-Law include Sue Thompson (Tahlequah, OK), Lorene Ballard & husband Butch (Tahlequah, OK), Flossie Girty (Tahlequah, OK), Judy Whitewater (Salina, OK), Sally West (Weleetka, OK) and Betty Scott (Okemah, OK).

Nephews include Travis Scott, Stacey Scott, Jeffrey Girty, Matthew Girty, Scott Thompson, Jason Ballard, Brandon Girty, Greg Girty, & Brent Girty.
Nieces include Stephanie Girty, Tracey Durman, Carla Stand, Alicia Fernandez, Sandra Pringle, and Suzanne Scott. Frances was proceeded in death by her Parents, Ellis Randolph Scott, Susie Jane (Looney) Scott; brothers John Ellis Scott & Jesse Randolph Scott; husband Andy Girty; and daughter Sherry Ann Girty and other family members.

Frances attended a one-room School named Bigham Rural School and went on to graduate from Okemah High School in 1956. Living in rural Okemah, Frances recalls having to walk, ride a horse, or by wagon to attent church, visit relatives or go to town. As a result of living in the country, she remembers having chores to do such as feeding the chickens, cows, pigs and horses along with house cleaning. Frances enjoyed playing independent girls basketball tournaments with her cousins while in High School. And recently found out she also played Softball. Which is why she had no problem following her children and husband to Indian Softball/Basketball Tournaments. After graduating from Okemah High School, Frances followed her brother John to attend the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS. After completing her post high school graduate studies certificate at Haskell, Frances accepted several jobs, including working as a Nanny for a wealthy family in Chicago, Illinois, and later she worked as a Girls Dormitory Matron at the Chilocco Indian School near Arkansas City, KS.

Sometime later, after a chance meeting, Andy and Frances began dating and eventually married on June 25, 1960 at the Haskell Indian Baptist Mission in Lawrence, KS.

After raising and nurturing her four children, Frances started working at Haskell, now a Junior College as a Dormitory Residential Assistant. Frances worked at Haskell for 21 years before retiring. A job she loved. Her caring nature made many students refer to her and Ms. Hermine as their Dorm “Moms”.

Simultaneously, she was always supporting and working in her church, the Lawrence Indian Methodist Church that opened in a facility of their own in a small old school building north of Lawrence in the early 1960s. She helped the LIUMC grow and was a steadfast believer in the Lord. Frances was a faithful parishioner who enjoyed serving the Lord and assisting local families and Haskell students in need. Through the years Frances began to assume more of the leadership duties in the Church and encouraged and supported the process of her husband Andy to complete studies to be become a Lay Speaker.

Approximately 4 years ago, Frances had to begin her battle with dialysis. Although it made her tired and often times ill, she always had a positive attitude. We are thankful for the dialysis center and those working there who made her feel loved and cared for. In addition to family, Frances leaves behind many beloved church members in Lawrence (Lawrence Indian UMC) and her church family in Okemah (Springfield UIMC), her Mother’s church (Arbeka Indian Baptist), and relatives at (Creek Chapel). Also numerous relatives and too many friends to count she made over the years we had her with us.
