Esther was always special to our family. She was friendly and made you feel so welcome! She and Grandma Myrtle sold tickets with Aunt June and Uncle Clarence at KU for many years and they all had a special bond. I will miss her.

“Peggy” was our favorite aunt. Her younger brother Ken lived with the Hammigs while going to college after WWII. After he married Lora, Bud and Peggy lived only a few blocks from our home. Her warmth and generous heart was a beacon to Ken and his children Tom, Sherry and Janet. We send our condolences to her family and friends.

    Dear Hammig Family,

I am Bob Shipley, (Mike Hammig’s’ brother-in-law – brother to Janie) writing to share our families admiration for your mother and grandmother and offer our condolences.

The miles that separate Kansas and NC caused most of Janie’s family to have only a limited personal exposure to Mr. & Mrs. Hammig. However that didn’t mean we didn’t know them. Gentle, kind, smiling, caring, engaged, gracious are words that come to mind in reflecting on our exposure to Mrs. Hammig. On a few occasions after the Hammigs relocated to their retirement home my travels took me through Kansas City. It was a real joy to drive out to Lawrence to always be met by a very warm and inviting hello and visit with the folks that have loved our sister so very much and given her a great, loyal, devoted husband. (It is easy to see where Mike’s role model came from.)

The thousand plus miles that separate Kansas & NC didn’t keep Mrs. Hammig from knowing our family. I was always impressed that even though my visits and contacts were infrequent and few and although she physically met our children and my sister’s children only once when they were all little at Mike & Janie’s wedding, she knew their names and always asked about them. If she was that attentive toward folks she met but once, it is easy to see that she was a wonderful, caring aunt, grandmother, and mother.

We all send our warmest sympathies and we pray that God’s peace will support each of her family with the strong reassurance that her faith and her life will open heavens doors to a great welcome and a great reward.

For all the Shipley Srs. and Jrs. and all the Moores we send our love.
