Ernest “Ernie” Simon, age 74, of Eudora KS
Passed away November 16,2022 peacefully at his home.
Ernie was born September 15,1948 in Colwich KS.
The son of Al and Helen Simon. He spent his youth growing up in Parsons KS.
Following graduation Ernie moved to Eudora KS where he spent the remainder of his life. He owned and operated his own excavation company for many years. Over the years Ernie was involved in many Eudora organizations including being a key member of the CPA to even his prominent role on the Eudora school board.
Ernie was a larger-than-life character who’s smile and laugh were absolutely contagious. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandsons play sports. He refused to miss any games. Ernie will be missed immensely by his numerous family and friends.
The family will greet friends from 3-5pm on Sunday November 27, 2022 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary – Eudora Chapel in Eudora.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2022 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Eudora.
The family suggests memorials in Ernie’s name to the Eudora Schools Foundation and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St. Lawrence Ks, 66044.
So sorry for your loss praying for him and his family. I enjoyed growing up with Ernie and the family. He was quite a boy and man I can’t hardly remember when he and I were together that we couldn’t stay out of trouble.
I’m sorry for the loss of this GREAT guy. When we went to Aunt Norma’s funeral several years ago, the extended family all went to lunch at the golf club after the service. I was lucky enough to sit next to Ernie, and we laughed our tails off, telling stories & tossing a few back. I just remember shaking his hand when we left– like grabbing a sack full of rocks. It was obvious that he worked hard his whole life, but his sense of humor was really fun. Blessings to him & his family, and heaven is a much brighter place today with him there.
I grew up in Parsons, Kansas and our families went to the same church together—St Mary’s and the same grade school and high school. Through the years we have lost touch but know Ernie went on to be a great man. That family was amazing growing up in the younger years with them. It definitely sounds like he continued and touched many, many life’s.
My sincere condolences for your loss. Our life’s go on—without suffering and pain. When one door of life closes, another opens. This one a “little” higher up with the greatest man of all. Know God’s arms are around your loved one.
Ernie was such a great friend to me in my formative years, he was one of my local heroes. A super good man, that will be truly missed by many. RIP my friend. Prayers to the family.
When I think of my childhood, it does not go without thinking of Ernie. I hope your memories help you through this difficult time.
Ernie was and always will be a true Eudora legend. He always had a smile on his face and never meet a stranger. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen him, but I know he would have started talking to me like he had seen me yesterday. RIP. Tracy and family, my prayer go out to you and your family.

RIP Ernie! I remember seeing your quite frequently at Grandma & Grandpa Bateson’s house often. Whether to work or for tax purposes. I’ll never forget the smile and slap on the back. You were one of the good ones! Until we meet again friend.

What a wonderful friend and neighbor. Ernie was always wanting to help others in anyway he could. I’m sure Bud and him are up there reminiscing together. My family and I will miss his smiling face. May he RIP. Our thought and prayers are with Tracy and the family.
As most of you know, Ernie and I lived together for 21 years. For probably 4 years, and especially the last two years, we knew he was dying and tried to make the best of our time together. The last six months have been very hard on both Ernie and myself. I promised him he would never go to a nursing home no matter what, and I kept that promise. I did all the things for him that would have been done in a nursing home. He was my main priority and I skipped many scheduled horseback riding camping trips in 2021 and 2022, because I just didn’t feel right leaving him alone. In the days before he died, he didn’t want me gone even an hour at a time. When I cleaned the barn, I was requested to come back inside after each stall cleaning to check on him, which of course I did. On Wednesday, I felt very lucky to be literally hugging him for 30 minutes as he passed in my arms. I miss him a lot already. He was a great guy and always meant well. The house isn’t the same without him and he will always be with me one way or another.
Our girls so remember our drive with Ernie to state basketball in the 90’’s. They thought he was so fun. It was a very memorable drive for them. Ernie was definitely larger than life and his smile was infectious!! He will be missed.

We have greatly enjoyed having Ernie and Belinda as neighbors for a good many years now.
Ernie shall always be remembered as a kind and giving guy, who was always willing to help us out. We know that recent times have been a struggle. God rest his soul and give him peace.
Tracy so sorry for the loss of your Dad. Though I have been away from Eudora for many years when ever I came back an saw him he never changed. He always had a smile and a hand shake with a warm greeting. Great man and I know he will be missed.

Sorry for your loss. Ernie was a good friend of the family; we took many trips together and spent a lot of weekends enjoying each other’s company.
He worked hard and became a well-respected contractor but always took time to be involved in the community projects.
I will miss his smile and since of humor.

We were so sorry to see the obituary for Earnie. I had the privilege of seeing Earnie in my office after he was rear ended while on his backhoe. The obit hit the nail on the head-“his smile and laughter were contagious!” Despite his injuries, he never complained. He was always so positive in his situation. Although I only knew him through my office, I ALWAYS looked forward to seeing him. Our prayers go out to his family.

Earnie was truly a person that enjoyed life. I first met Earnie when I started helping Bob Rice coach his girls softball team that Earnie sponsored. He always stopped and bought the girls ice cream after the games. I know the girls all felt how much Earnie cared for them, and that carried on into their adulthood. When my daughter’s Emporia State basketball team was going to Las Vegas for a preseason tournament, we saw Earnie at the gas station and he gave Gretchen a $50 bill and told her to use it on the casino floor…Gretch hit a $100 payout on her first slot try. Earnie was one of the greatest guys I have known… our prayers for Tracy and her family !
My condolences to you,Belinda. Ernie was a very special friend and we enjoyed a lot of conversations about too many horses, too many dogs,too many cats and the albino hedgehog. I always reminded him I took the kitten he wouldn’t let you keep and named the kitten,”Ernie”.He also told me many times how lucky he was to have you in his life. One of our last conversations a few days before he passed ,he apologized to me for you not being able to ride on a cold Sunday afternoon as we had planned. He said he knew you had missed out on many riding dates taking him to all his doctors appointments, transfusions and numerous trips to the emergency room the last couple of years. He just wanted the comfort of you being close that Sunday. Ernie was so grateful for your many efforts to keep him out of nursing home and taking such good care of him even though he said, “You were not the greatest cook“

I will forever remember Ernie’s smile and his love of life. Everyone knew that fun was on the agenda when he entered the room, and New Year’s Eve was made special many years when he and Belinda could join our group.

Belinda ours prayers are with you. Ernie was such a fun and great guy. One time when he did some work for us he gave me the bill. Payment was 2 peanut butter pies not delivered at the same time. Had a laugh with that but he got his pies. RIP Ernie

Belinda, Ray and I enjoyed having Ernie and you as neighbors. When the first flake of snow fell, we knew Ernie would soon be heading up our drive. Ray enjoyed making candy and pineapple upside-down cakes for Ernie because he knew he had quite a sweet tooth. We both enjoyed his sense of humor and seeing him on his motorcycle. He was a great guy and he will be sorely missed. I am so sorry, but I would give everything I have if Ray could have passed in my arms as Ernie did in yours.

Ernie was one of the nicest guys! He was a giving person, always doing for others! He would show up and clear our driveway of snow, and drive off. Never expected any pay, maybe cookies.
He would take gravel to my Mom’s driveway, and spent quite awhile visiting with her. He made an impact on many!
You could always see Ernie at Eudora ball games and the Eudora CPA. He was the life of the party! Always smiling!
When his health was declining, Ernie still made it to Jerrys’ Mom’s farm auction.
I’m sure he’s shaking things up in Heaven!
He, will be missed by many!
