Donna Kay Weigel

Funeral services for Donna Kay Weigel, 82, Lawrence, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Kentucky Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. Donna passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at her home. 

Donna was born on June 21, 1941, in Fort Dodge, IA, the daughter of Loren and Jeraldine (Batie) Burley.

She married Francis Weigel on June 6, 1964, and moved to Lawrence. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2020.

She was a stay-at-home mother, raising four children and volunteering at the schools for 25 years and then went to work and retired from the Lawrence Journal World on August 16, 2010.

She was active in her community doing volunteer work at the hospital, Saint John’s School, Sunset Hill School and Saint John’s Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Jolene Gilliam, Des Moines, Iowa, two sons, John Weigel, Lawrence, KS, Justin Weigel, Olathe, KS, two brothers, Timothy Burley, Ankeny, IA, Daniel Burley, Boone, IA, and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Cynthia Jackson, Lawrence, KS, sister, Jane Harding, Iowa Falls, IA, and brother, Robert Burley, Peoria, AZ.

Memorial contributions may be made in Donna’s name to Saint John the Evangelist Church and Lawrence Humane Society may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
