I am better for having known him.

Chuck was a giant among men and also a gentle giant. We have had the distinct privilege and honor to not only work with Chuck, but also call him our friend. “Big Chuck” as he was affectionately known at our house, he loved friends, life, but family above all else. Lisa, Taylor, Chase, Austin, and Courtney, words cannot describe how sorry we are for your loss. He touched so many lives and we are very fortunate to have him be a part of ours. We will forever cherish the times we shared and the memories that resulted. Thank you Chuck for everything.

  25. Sebastian Bonner on January 30, 2019 at 8:18 am

Chuck was just such as great guy in all respects. He was definately one of the best men I have known while living in Lawrence. I’m very thankful he and Lisa gave me the privilege to coach Chase and Austin. I am also thankful that Chuck allowed me to get to know his beautiful family. In my many years of coaching, Chuck was my all time favorite Dad because he always greeted me with a smile regardless of the circumstances. Chuck was also by far the best tailgate host in recent KU history. Lisa, Taylor, Chase and Caroline, Austin, and Courtney please know that the Bonner family is thinking of you at this difficult time. Condolences and much love to the Hoag family❤️????????

  32. Steve M Hanna on January 30, 2019 at 2:57 pm

Chuck and I were teammates in some capacity for over 20 years. Together we experienced tumultuous changes within the utility industry as we transitioned from Kansas Public Service (KPS), to Aquila, and finally Black Hills Energy. Through all the ambiguity Chuck remained steadfast exhibiting a calm confident demeanor to those in his charge. He was a pillar of strength to all that he interacted with. He loved Lawrence and was an integral part of the community; however his unwavering passion was for his family. I will particularly miss his humor, his laugh, and his competitiveness on the golf course. I feel fortunate that I was able to share in some small aspect of his life; he was an intelligent gentle giant in so many ways. God Bless you Chuck and God Bless your family. Until we meet again hit “em” straight and keep “em” in the fairway.
    Steve Hanna

    Lisa,

Patti and I are praying for you and the kids. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching alongside Chuck as our kids were growing up. You and he were a perfect compliment for each other and it was always great running into you around town and at KU events. He was far too young and we’ll miss those short visits catching up on family. Rest in Peace Chuck.

  35. Dan Devin on January 30, 2019 at 7:45 pm

I was introduced to Chuck by my brother on the Hill for a KU football game many years ago. I may have only spoke with Chuck 5-6 times a year for many years on the Hill, it was also the last place I saw him and Lisa this past football season. Chuck always greeted me with his great smile and treated me as if I were a lifelong friend. Thoughts and prayers to his family. I will never tailgate on the Hill without thinking of Chuck when I see the large gathering just up the Hill from our tent. Rest in piece my friend.

My Deepest Sympathy to the Hoag family. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Chuck over the last 24 yrs. as a BHE team member in Ks. He traveled to SWKS on a number of occasions for work and on occasion would include a round of golf. He never complained about his trips out here even though it was in the middle of NO WHERE!! Chuck was a very competitive guy and we would often challenge each other. Something that I admired about Chuck was his passion for his family. We would often talk about our families and how proud he was of his wife and children. I will miss those opportunities to catch up on everyone. May God watch over his family. Rest in peace my friend. You will truly be missed.

  40. Larissa Long on January 31, 2019 at 1:21 pm

Lisa, my deepest sympathy to you and the children. I also had the great pleasure of working with Chuck for 25+ years and I always found him to have a big smile on his face and ready for a round of golf! He loved his family and so enjoyed attending the children’s activities. He will be missed.

So blessed to be able to count the Hoag Family as friends. Incredible family and true salt of the earth people. I was very fortunate to teach Taylor, Chase and Austin at Sunset Hill and would have loved to have been around to teach Courtney as well. Chuck and Lisa were the best parents a teacher could ask for; so wonderfully giving of their time and talents in support of their kids and us staff. Prayers for peace and comfort during this time of grief; and prayers for joy as you celebrate how powerfully Chuck lived his life for the good of others.
