Carolyn passed away on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, at her home.
Carolyn was born on February 16th, 1934, in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of Clyde and Pauline (Brune) Husted. She is predeceased by her two sisters, Barbara Muiller of Oskaloosa and Topeka and Mary Katherine Kufahl of Lawrence.
Carolyn graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in home economics. She married Lewis A. Phillips January 26th, 1955. They had three children: Terrence (wife Deanna) of Lawrence, Constance (husband Rick) of Maryland and Jon (wife Vickie) of Georgia.
Carolyn was a very loving Bama to Christopher, Madelyn, Taylor and Katelyn. She was also a proud aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Lew and Carolyn lived in many locations across the United States. After staying home (in Louisiana, New Mexico, Massachusetts, California and Washington) with their children when they were young, Carolyn pursued many careers, incl. home economics teacher in Louisiana, office manager and sales representative for manufactured parts in California and real estate agent in Georgia.
Carolyn retired upon their return to Lawrence in 1996. Subsequently, she volunteered extensively at the Lawrence Community Shelter, participated in P.E.O, served as a docent at the Spencer Museum of Art and served as the First United Methodist Church Administrative Board Chair and the West Campus Vision and Building Chairs.
She loved spending time with family and friends, gardening, golfing with Lew, traveling around the globe, sewing, cooking, playing bridge, following the Jayhawks, and reading.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Carolyn’s name to: Lawrence Community Shelter, First United Methodist Church, or Lawrence Memorial Hospital Health Foundation Cancer Center Expansion and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Jon and Vickie, my heartfelt prayers and sympathy are with you and your family. What a blessing it must be to have this dear lady in your lives.
We join Carolyn and Lew’s many friends in sending healing thoughts to Carolyn’s family at her sudden passing. Our friendship with classmates Carolyn and Lew is filled with memories ranging, for Fred, from ice skating on Carolyn’s family farm pond to our enjoyment of Carolyn’s elegant dinner dinner parties. Carolyn’s sparkling personality was contagious. Always the gracious hostess who made everyone feel special, her love of family and her community involvement set a standard at the highest level. We hope and trust the solace all will seek in honoring her many accomplishments will continue to inspire. With affection, Fred and Nancy Coombs
My deepest condolences to the family and all who loved Carolyn. Wishing you peace.
