Bruce Allen Hosek

Bruce Allen Hosek, 60, of Lawrence, KS passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2021. The family will greet friends at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 4:30 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. A live-stream of the service will be available on Warren- McElwain Mortuary website.

Bruce was born on January 16, 1961 in Winner, SD, the son of Herman and Aileen Hosek and the youngest of five children.

He graduated from Winner High School, where he was involved in band and chorus.

Music continued to be a central part of Bruce’s life, playing the drums and singing in bands. His faith in Christ was his foundation. He served on worship teams, loved others deeply, and had a gentle, loving spirit. Bruce approached life with an open heart and open arms, often being a listening ear to those hurting. He enjoyed his career as a Project Supervisor and was responsible for the success of many multi-million dollar projects throughout the US. However, he rarely talked about the job itself but rather always shared stories about the wonderful co-workers, staff, and bosses he met along the way. Oftentimes, he could be found reminding his men that God and family come first. His children and grandchildren were the joy of his life.

Survivors include his children, Anna Needham married to Ben, of Canadian, TX; Alexander Hosek married to Laura, of Lawrence, KS; Abigail Pryor married to Nathan, of Topeka, KS; and his six grandchildren. He is also survived by four siblings, Dave Hosek married to Darla, of Lawrence, KS, Diane Nemec married to Victor, of Holabird, SD, Duane Hosek, of Winner, SD, and Cheryl Hosek of Winner, SD; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Dear Hosek family,
I was so saddened to hear of Bruce’s passing. Sadly, it has been a long time since I’ve seen Bruce. I remember him as a fun and kind person with a sweet smile and gentle laugh. He was always ready to help and do whatever was needed. I will remember the times he brought me (the Pastor’s wife) an orchid corsage each Easter. So sweet! Bruce was our worship leader for a while and I loved hearing him sing with the team and especially sing a solo. My favorite song was “Thank You” which was about a person who had gone to heaven. The storyline of the song is about many people who came up to the person and thanked him for the things he had done to draw them closer to Jesus. They were simple things, nothing outrageous or anything, just things that he let Jesus do through him to bless others. That was Bruce…a man that Jesus lived in and through to bless others. Thank you, Bruce.

Brucie! I always called him that when he greeted me at HCC. I have such fond memories of one of the nicest, gentlest guys I have ever known. What a smile, what a sense of humor, what an open heart. We were friends for a couple years, but he impacted me enough to remember him so fondly now and forever. I look forward to you greeting me again Brucie!

Bruce was my best friend for several years before he moved away and no one could ever ask for a better friend. He was gentle, kind, had a servant’s heart, was fun and funny, loyal, and made a positive difference in Many lives. He has a special place in my heart…and in the heart of his Real Best Friend, Jesus. He sang beautifully with our worship team & one of my favorites was with him, Dave Cook, either my daughter Tacy or Jody & Another of several great women singers: “Operator, Get Me Jesus On The Line”—Bruce no longer needs the operator!

We first met Bruce in 1981 at a college fellowship event at KU. From then on I knew him as a solid drummer, a loving family man, a super nice guy, and a devoted Christian. I have not seen him for years, and so sorry to hear of his passing. Prayers for strength and comfort for his family.

I am sure anyone who had a word with him felt that he was such a nice person. I still remember the first time I met Bruce. Even though we had just a few words, I was able to feel how thoughtful he was. He knew how to respect other’s words and feeling. Of course, he had a great sense of humor like other Hosek’s family members. Dear Hosek family, I am truly sorry for your loss. I miss him, and He will be missed by so many people.

As a coworker, I unfortunately, never had the opportunity to meet Bruce in person, but just by a couple phone calls and emails, it was quickly evident what a great person Bruce was to his inner core.
    He will be missed.

I just saw this obituary. I was shocked to see it, and saddened. Bruce was a dear person, a friend, a band member, and a wonderful musician. I was honored to perform with him for many years, and enjoyed his immense humor and wry wit, his amazing talent, his compassionate nature, and his loving friendship. My prayers go out to his family and other friends. He often spoke of his children and grandchildren and how much he loved them. He was so proud of each of them; he believed that they were each outstanding and special. I have so many great memories of Bruce; especially from the Black Pearl days. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss; shared by me and many many people.

Bruce and I worked together about 6 months. He was a very soft spoken man. We often talked about our families. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren. He couldn’t wait to travel back home during the Thanksgiving holidays to see them. Bruce was a very kind man and I will greatly miss him.
