Bill Hack

Bill was born on July 2nd, 1955 in Lawrence and spent his childhood there. He graduated from Lawrence High School and attended the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the KU Men’s Golf team and the Sigma Chi fraternity. He pursued and achieved his dream of becoming a PGA Professional, followed by a career in the restaurant and real estate industries.

Bill married Michelle McCubbin in 1987, with whom he shared the joy of three sons. He lived his life by the principles he learned as a gentleman of the game of golf, and he considered his family and golf to be his true loves and passions.

Bill is survived by his mother, Julie (Lawrence, KS); three sons, Wilson (26; Seattle, WA), Weston (25; Wichita, KS), and Hudson (19; Lawrence, KS); three siblings, Al Hack (wife Sue; Lawrence, KS), Cary Pandzik (husband Mike; Lenexa, KS), and Chris Hack (wife Dana; Greenville, SC); and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Al “Big Al” Hack.

The family will hold a celebration of Bill’s life this Friday, January 21st, from 2 – 4 pm at Lawrence Country Club. Please wear casual or golf attire.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill’s memory to Music Theatre Kansas City or to junior golf initiatives in the Lawrence area and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS  66044.

Whenever I spoke with Bill, he always asked about our son. And loved to give me an update on his three young men.

A sweet man who was always professional and calm. He will be missed.

Michelle I am so sorry to hear about Bill! There isn’t a time that goes by when I think of KU and our hysterical times together that I laugh out loud. From Taco Johns soft shell tacos (I think we each ate 8) to WAHOOO DE WAHOOO to the song Solid as a Rock – those sure were the good ole days and I wouldn’t have changed any of it. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family!!! Love you! Cindy Beal Smith

Hard to put into a few words what a great person Bill Hack was. My brother in law was a throwback to an earlier time when people were more civil and thoughtful. Pretty sure he got that from his parents. He was gracious and welcoming. No one ever had a better handshake when they greeted you. He was a calming influence in the chaos of life whether it was at work, with family or in a public setting. You always felt better about everything after spending any amount of time with Bill. My solace lies in the fact that he imparted his gift to 3 incredible sons..Wilson, Weston and Hudson will carry on his gift and impact on others. RIP Bill…..you were way under par in the life you lived and example you shared.

My heart goes out to all the Hack family over the loss of Bill. I have vivid memories of him escorting me down the aisle as a bridesmaid in Al and Sue’s wedding, as well as some warm Christmas gatherings. His kindness and generosity to an awkward teen was an early sign of his kind, gentle spirit and were greatly appreciated. At my father’s memorial, just about a year before I met Bill, the minister talked about my dad’s life in terms of the ball’s soaring trajectory in the game of golf he loved so much. I know that Bill, Big Al, and my dad are at peace on that heavenly course. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I’m praying that God will comfort the voids in your hearts from Bill’s passing. He was a terrific guy that introduced me to a huge group of friends that soon became my friends. We had a lot of fun working together at the Town Shop and The Wheel. His smile was authentic and engaging. No matter how many years passed between seeing him, he made it seem like yesterday. I’m sure he and Woo have a daily tee time in heaven.

  22. Jill Ballew on January 21, 2022 at 9:43 am

I entered the real estate world too late to get to know Bill as many others. You can tell a lot about a persons character by the way others speak about them, and I’ve heard so many comments about how Bill is somebody you wanted to work with, that did the job right, and somebody that would go the extra mile.

Sending my condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Hack families. I’m very sorry for your loss.

  23. Mel and Diana Deutsch on January 21, 2022 at 12:59 pm

Dear Family Members, we are so sorry to hear about Bill. Julie, Al, Cary, Chris, Michelle, and the boys. It’s quite a shocking event….Bill was fit, handsome, great golfer, and always friendly. Our community will miss him. 30 years ago I had regular trips to Colorado Springs and always went to Chili’s to eat so I could see Bill. The first time Louie Lewis was with him and we had a great time…ha ve many fond memories. When the boys were little you’d see them at LCC golfing with Bill, and then the boys worked as bag boys.. Our thoughts and prayers are with you …we can’t make the service because we’re out of town. May the peace of God be with you.

  28. Warren and Gina Vincent on January 21, 2022 at 6:42 pm

Bill was older than I,and set an example for us at CJHS, where we met. We all looked up to him.
Through the years I would run into him from time to time. He was gracious and always had a smile.

  32. Loren Taylor on January 23, 2022 at 2:31 pm

    Dear Friends,

I am so sorry to learn of Bill’s passing. We were the closest of friends in our elementary school days at Cordley, just as our fathers, Roy and Al, became closer friends late in their lives. I have such fond memories of our friendship and seeing his parents, brothers and sister at their house on Mass Street. Bill and I used to celebrate that our birthdays were only one day apart (mine being on July 1).

My heart and prayers go out to the entire Hack family.
