Bertha H. Nichols

With love and cherished memories, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Bertha Nichols, who left this world peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 100 in Salinas, California. She lived a full and remarkable life, touching the hearts of so many along the way.
Born on July 12, 1924, Bertha was the youngest of ten siblings and the last surviving member of her family. She moved to Eudora, Kansas, in 1954, where she built a home filled with love, laughter, and music. She was first married to Richard Ford, who preceded her in death. Later in life, she found and married a true love, William “Bill” Nichols, who she spent many wonderful years together before his passing.
Bertha’s journey was one of perseverance and passion. Before pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher, she worked as a telephone operator, always finding joy in connecting with others. At 44 years old, she made the courageous decision to go back to school, earning her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas. She went on to become a beloved teacher at Nottingham Elementary School, where she inspired generations of students with her patience, encouragement, and deep love for learning.
But beyond teaching, music was her soul. She was a gifted pianist and organist, filling the Methodist Church with the sounds of hymns and classical music, but she was just as well known for her famous boogie-woogie piano playing, which never failed to bring a smile to those lucky enough to hear it. Whether it was a quiet moment at home or a gathering of friends, her music was a gift she gave freely.
She was a woman of quiet strength, quick wit, and deep kindness. Whether through a thoughtful conversation, a shared laugh, or a warm embrace, she made everyone feel special. She devoted herself to family, friends, students, and neighbors, always leading with love and generosity.
She is deeply missed by her children:
- Beverly Emerson (daughter)
- Mike Ford (son)
Her legacy continues through her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including:
- Marni Rice (granddaughter)
- Cassie Rice (granddaughter)
- Zachary Emerson (grandson)
- Jonathan Ford (grandson)
- Silvia Ford (granddaughter)
Bertha was laid to rest on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Eudora Cemetery in Eudora, Kansas.
Mom lived a full and beautiful life, and we take comfort in knowing that her kindness, her wisdom, and the music she shared will forever echo in our hearts. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
You and your precious “life’s song” will always be with us and your many blessed worlds… Continued God speed, Bertha.
