Archie Hawkins

A Mass of Christian Burial for Archibald Leo “Archie” Hawkins, 94, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013 at St. John Catholic Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Lawrence.  He died Friday, August 23, 2013 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with family at his side.
Archie was born April 24, 1919 in Martin, South Dakota the son of William and Agnes (Cournoyer)  Hawkins, Sr.
He served his country in the US Army Air Corp during World War II.  He served 61 combat Missions in CBI and ETO in B-25’s.
He taught in the vocational department at Haskell Indian Nation College from 1946 until he retired in 1976.
He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Haskell Alumni, VFW life member, National Association of Federal Employees, Kiwanis, Rotary and was a United Way Chairman.  He was also in the Indian Hall of Fame.
He married Mollie Hand on September 4, 1941 in Lawrence, KS.  She preceded him in death on February 21, 1992.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Jimboy, Mary (Elijah) Jackson,  Rosemond Gonzales; one son, Charles (Janie) Hawkins all of Lawrence; his brother, Benedict Hawkins, Ft. Thompson, SD; grandchildren, Rusty (Karen) Coffey, Carrie Coffey, Kristie Coffey, Tyra (Kevin) Newman, Tasha (Steve) Aldrich, Jake (Jen) Hawkins, Ron (Sharon)  England, Kelly England, Rebekah (Joshua) Boline, William Jackson, Clement Gonzales, Marcella (Ruben Uribe) Gonzales, Clarissa (Hector) Marin, Jamie Gonzales; great-grandchildren, Janesah, Damien, Darien, Kylie, Mollie, Paulette Coffey, Aron, Caden, Jacob Newman, Makenzie, Koby, Karlie, Kendall Aldrich, Talis Hawkins, Cante, Charlene England, Isabella Mini, Louis, England, Danielle, Adasia, Amaia Boline, Keenan, Shylynn, Tate Yahamani Gonzales, Santiago Uribe, Isabella, Gabriella, Marco Marin; one great-great grandson, William Becenti. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, William Hawkins, Henry Hawkins, Joseph Hawkins, Louise Hall and two son-in-laws, Wayne Jimboy and Benedict Gonzales.
The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family suggests memorials in his name to Visiting Nurses Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    Archie was a great man and a good friend. He was always friendly and helpful. I will miss him as will all his family. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. Charlie and Janie take comfort in knowing that Archie had completed a very full life. Best of everything, as always.

    Sincere Sympathy to you in the loss of your loved one. My late husband,Ted, and Archie were good friends and fellow golfers. He was a special person to Ted. I admired Archie in his being so active in later years. My prayers are with you. God bless you.

    Charlie and family,

    Remember running around with Charlie in old 51 Pontiac going by their Arkansas home, with Archie mowing lawn when Charlie was suppose to be. All the memories.
