Funeral services for Wilford Brown, Jr., 80, Lawrence, will be held at Warren-McElwain Mortuary at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2011. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. Mr. Brown died March 12, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 7, 1931 in Lawrence, KS, the son of Wilford Brown, Sr. and Fredericka (Porter) Brown.
Wilford lived in Lawrence most of his life. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Over the years he worked as a taxi driver, city bus driver, and owned an auto detailing shop. After retiring, he drove a bus for the Boys & Girls Club.
Wilford was a member of the 9th Street Baptist Church in Lawrence. He married Charlotte Olson on November 30, 1968 in Minnesota. They later divorced.
Survivors include one daughter, Adrienne Brown,Minnesota; one brother, Leroy Brown, Bowie, MD; two sisters, Charlotte Dickson, Lawrence, KS, and Carol Sue Galloway, Arlington, TX; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Leland Brown (1992); and two sisters, Joyce Barksdale (1992), and Bonnie Wallace (2002).
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17th at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post #14 and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
Dear cousins, I wanted to let you know I am thinking of you during this time of heartache, Buddy as well as the rest of the Brown family were very close to the Bond family, Lawrence was our second home and I have many fond memories of the time we spent there, I hope that the love of family and friends help your hearts to heal and that the God of all comfort comforts you during the days to come, Psalms 34:18 states Jehovah is near to those that are broken at heart, and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. This our creator does in a large way. With Christian love your cousin Marva.
Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers. Buddy was so kind to me and the family, and I loved him so much. Take comfort in the fact that he is resting with no more troubles. May we all look forward to the bible’s promised resurrection at John 5:28, 29, where it states,”Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” We send our love and sincere condolences.
