Warren Coons

A memorial service for Warren Ratcliffe Coons, 87, Lawrence, KS will be held at a date to be determined.  He passed away March 25, 2012 at Brandon Woods of Alvamar.

He was born on August 6, 1924 in Hartford, CT to Walter and T. Beatrice Coons.

He graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford in 1943 and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight officer until the war ended in 1945.  During his training in Texas he met Janelle Howell and they were married May 25, 1946 in Denton, TX.

Warren was a manufacturing engineer for United Technologies in Windsor Locks, CT for over 40 years.  Warren and Janelle retired to Sun City Center, FL where they lived for 15 years before moving to Lawrence in 2004.

Warren enjoyed traveling, square dancing with Janelle for over 40 years, and was an avid golfer.  He was an active member of the United Methodist Church for over 60 years.  He was recognized for his volunteer service with the Red Cross and the Sun City Center Emergency Squad.

Warren’s parents; a brother, Walter; and a sister, Betty Jane preceded him in death.  Warren is survived by Janelle, his wife of 65 years, a son Philip and wife, Deborah of Saratoga Springs, NY; a daughter, Susan Wade, and husband, John of Lawrence, KS; and a son, Robert and wife, Sherri of Goshen, KY.  He had seven grandchildren, Kate, Jonathan, Timothy, Angelica, Kaitlyn, Andrea and Meghan.

The family suggests memorials in his name to First United Methodist Church, Lawrence and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

Mrs. Coons, I was so sorry to read of Mr. Coons’s passing. Whenever I hear your names, it brings me back to my childhood and Asbury Church. Rely on your faith during this time and know that he is in the room that God prepared for him. Maybe he has even reconnected with my parents and the Houseleys. Lifting up prayers for all of you. Sincerely, Joan Pinto
