Funeral service for Walter Henry Reed, Sr., 81, Lawrence will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. He died August 6, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 4, 1930 in Clarksville, Arkansas the son of Willy David and Helen (Hogan) Reed.
Walter retired as a custodian from the Douglas County Courthouse. He was the coordinator for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Walter was famous for his Wassel and good cooking.
He married Barbara J. Herbert on March 14, 1969 in Reno, Nevada. She preceded him in death on May 2, 2000.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Walker, Wanda Reed, Denise Reed, all of Lawrence; two sons, Kevin Reed, Martinez, California, Walter Reed, Jr., Florida; one sister, Carol Harris, Lawrence; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Vaughn and Sidney McCullough and two brothers, Willy Alfred Reed and Thirl McDonald Reed.
The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2011 at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Babcock Tenants Association and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

babcock 2 years ago. He use to call me a lot then when he got

Walter was a wonderful man and a real gentleman. I worked with him from 1979 until his retirement and really respected the work ethic that he had and the work that he did. He was fun to talk to and we shared many experiences over the years. His organization of the Thanksgiving dinners was legendary and I know it was never the same after he retired.Even after he retired while I still worked for the Treasurer’s we kept in touch, he would visit and call once is a while. I missed being in touch these last couple of years. It was a disappointment that I was not able to get away from work today to honor him in person. My deepest sympathy to all the family. As he was working you always were in his thoughts.
So sorry to read about Walt. I worked at the courthouse in the late 70’s-early 80’s. Walt was such a special person, always had a smile for everyone. I don’t know anyone who didn’t enjoy chatting with him. I have a collection of favorite recipes and “Walts B-Q Meatloaf” is one of them. The Thanksgiving dinner was always something to look forward to.
