Robert Frederick

Memorial Services for Robert E. “Bob” Frederick, 69, Lawrence, KS will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at The Lied Center on the University of Kansas West Campus. Inurnment (Private?) will be at –.

He died on Friday, June 12, 2009 at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS.

 

He was born on March 4, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, the son of —

 

He was a 1962 graduate of KU with a B.S. in Chemistry.  He later received his Master of Education from KU in 1964 and his Doctor of Education from KU in 1984.

 

Since 2001, Dr. Frederick was an assistant professor & lecturer in Sports Management at the University of Kansas. He was former Athletic Director at the University of Kansas, a position that he held from 1987–2001. He presided over many facility enhancements, the upgrading of most of the athletic programs, the hiring of successful coaches including, Roy Williams, and the increase in funding of total athletic programs. During his tenure, he hired head coaches in eight Olympic sports and saw his teams go to two Aloha Bowl Championships, three basketball Final Fours, including a National Championship in 1988, as well as a College Baseball World Series and a College Women’s Softball World Series.  During all these years and events, he continued to develop a comprehensive total personal support program for student athletes. Earlier, he was the Assistant Athletic Director, and Executive Director of the Williams Educational Fund at the University of Kansas (1981-85)

 

During his coaching career, he served as a head basketball coach at Russell High School (1966-70), Russell, KS, Coffeyville Junior College (1970-71), Coffeyville, KS, and Lawrence High School (1977-81).  He served as an assistant basketball coach at Olympia Fields, IL, (1964-66) The University of Kansas (1971-72), Brigham Young University (1972-75), and Stanford University (1975-77).

 

Dr. Frederick was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence.  He served on the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Board of Directors, was also a member of the Friends of the Lied Series (supporting performing arts at KU) (1991-1996, President, 1991-1994), Kansas Special Olympics Advisory Board, Big Brothers, Big Sisters Advisory Board, the Sunflower State Games, Board of Directors and the State of Kansas spokesperson for Bicycle Helmet Safety, Kansas Safe Kids Coalition.  He served on various other Boards and Committees, too numerous to mention.
