
The funeral service for Richard J. Demby, 83, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Victory Bible Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. Mr. Demby died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 10, 1927 in Nittayuma, Mississippi, the son of Johnny M. and Phyllis Holmes Demby. He and his family moved to Lawrence from Hollandale, MS in 1969.
Mr. Demby retired in 1991 from the City of Lawrence, where he was a supervisor for the Parks and Recreation Department. He was a former member of the Church of God.
He married Bertha Mae Barfield on December 21, 1949 in Dekalb, Mississippi. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include nine sons; John R. (wife, Veronica) Barfield, Gary, IN, Lamar (wife, Lucille) Bohannon, DeKalb, MS, James E., Lawrence, Jerry (wife, Linda), Gary, IN, J.R., Lawrence, Jerome M. Sr. (wife, Elaine), Norman, OK, Jan W., Norman, OK, Reginald M., Lawrence, Ulysses G., Lawrence; one daughter, Nancy M. Demby, Kansas City, MO; one brother, Samuel Demby, Raymond, MS; four sisters; Lessie Mae Rhodes, Hollandale, MS, Easter M. Pennington, Lawrence, Gladys Demby, Lincoln, NE, Phyllis Fulton, Lawrence, twenty seven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
The family will greet friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

I met Mr. Demby a few times when I worked with Bertha at Cherry Manor back in the 1970’s. I remember he always had a smile on his face and a kind word or a joke for everyone he encountered.
