Graveside Services for Renate E. Hensiek-Baars, 65, Lawrence will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, KS at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.  She died on March 10, 2010 at home.

She was born on November 1, 1944 in Mittenwalde, West Germany, the daughter of Hans Matschke and Waltraud Piontek Matschke. She moved from Berlin, Germany in 1964 and lived in Ottawa from 1965 to 1979 before moving to Lawrence.  

Mrs. Baars was employed by Kansas Geological Survey from 1967 – 1986 where she was a Graphic Artist.  She enjoyed people and loved to watch her grandchildren grow.

She married Gene Hensiek on February 7, 1964 in Berlin, Germany.  He preceded her in death, January 1, 1984.  She later married Don L. Baars on January 21, 1996 in Las Vegas, NV.  He preceded her in death July 7, 2008.

Survivors include one son, Michael Hensiek, McLouth, KS; one daughter, Dianna Mock, Baldwin City, KS; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild; and one brother, Gerhard Matschke of Berlin, Germany.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Peiter Matschke, 
 
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15, 2010 at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorial contribution in her name to the ALS Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

    I am really sorry not to be able to meet Renate again. I met her years ago in Lawrence at the Geological Survey and remember good moments with her. It is a great loss for her family and friends. My sincere condolences from Spain.

    We are so sorry for your loss. The whole neighborhood will miss Renate. Especially the kids, she was always so sweet to the children and they loved her as much as she did them. Our prayers are with your family.

    I am sorry for your loss. I knew Renate from the KGS; she always had a smile and a giggle whenever we chatted. My father also passed from ALS; my sincere sympathy goes out to the family.
