Raymond Russell

Funeral services for Raymond Lee Russell, 74, Lawrence will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.  Mr. Russell died December 9, 2011 at his home.

He was born on September 27, 1937 in Harlan County, NE the son of Robert E. and Eva Darliene (Hellerick) Russell.

Raymond was a retired iron worker and last worked for Rebar, Inc. out of Kansas City.  He belonged to Union Local 10.  He also belonged to the Antique Auto Club of Lawrence and enjoyed going to car shows.  He was a member of the Lawrence African Violet Club and the K.C. African Violet Club.  His love of African violets came from an Aunt and he liked going to conventions.  He also hybridized African violets and had many registered in his name.  He created beautiful designs for flower shows.  He was an avid gardner and was known for his home canned jalapeno’s and hot dill pickles. Raymond loved the holidays and often decorated his yard.  

He married Robin Lynn Beach on June 11, 1961 in Franklin, NE.  She preceded him in death on April 17, 2011 after almost 50 years together.

Survivors include a son, Rocky Lee Russell, Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Jeannie Russell, Lawrence; two brothers and one sister; grandchildren, Jason, Heather, Bradley, Hailey, Joshua and one great-grandson, Jesse.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Randy Lee Russell on July 8, 2001.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the mortuary. 

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Raymond Russell Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    Raymond was a friend to all and never met a stranger. He shared his interest in his flowers, show designs, woodworking and his antique cars. We will miss him.

    We are sorry for your loss. Raymond was a very special neighbor, gentle and kind. We only lived in the neighborhood a few years but my parent’s were neighbors for many years.
