Graveside services for Rachel E. Grantham, 99, formerly of Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. She died on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Garden Terrace of Overland Park.
She was born on April 25, 1910 in Iola, KS, the daughter of Perry and Emma Powell Heath. She lived for many years in Lawrence.
Mrs. Grantham was a graduate of Iola Community Junior College and received her bachelor’s degree in teaching from Emporia State University.
Mrs. Grantham was a retired school teacher and librarian for USD 497 in Lawrence. She taught first at Woodlawn Elementary School and then later at McAllister Elementary School.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Theta Sigma Upsilon social sorority, and the Kappa Kappa Iota professional sorority. She was a lifetime member of the National Educational Association. She was for many years, the Docent Coordinator at the Watkins Community Museum and also volunteered for Audio Reader.
She was married to Wendell P. Grantham on October 9, 1933 in Allen County, KS. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1954.
Survivors include a son, Winston Grantham of Lenexa, KS, a daughter, Marilyn Good of Austin, TX, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren..
The family suggests memorial contributions in her name to the Audio Reader and they may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
She will lie in state at the mortuary from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.

My most sincere condolences on the passing of Mrs. Grantham. I really thought of her as another grandparent. I have vivid memories of being in her house as a little kid; I remember Breakfast Squares and her terrarium! We still have the stockings she made for Christmas, and I remember she gave me a basket of dorm goodies when I went off to college. She was a lovely woman; I regret that I lost touch with her when I got older. She was a big part of my early childhood when we were neighbors.

I have a client who shared with me that Mrs. Grantham taught her how to roller skate when she was about 6. Ms. Grantham was about 13 at the time.
Such a beautiful lady and she accomplished so much in her very full life. We send you our heartfelt sympathy and our love.
Kenny and I both send our sympathy to Rachel’s family. I will remember Rachel as a kind mentor to a new inexperienced teacher at Schwegler Elementary. Kenny and all his family enjoyed Rachel as a trusted and fun neighbor.
She will be missed.
Mrs Grantham was one of the best teachers I had when I was a student at McAllister. I have fond memories of her and have no doubt she touched many students lives.
