Memorial Mass for Paul J. McCarthy, 83, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 22 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Monsignor Vincent Krische will officiate.
Paul passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 23, 1928 in Chicago, IL, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Loosen McCarthy.
He graduated from El Reno High School in El Reno, OK in 1946. He then received his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950, his Master’s Degree in Mathematics in 1952 and his Ph.D in Mathematics in 1955. All three degrees were received from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.
On June 11, 1952 Paul married L. Jean White in El Reno, OK. They shared over 60 years of marriage.
Paul taught at Holy Cross University, Worcester, MA from 1955 to 1956. He then taught at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL from 1956 to 1961. In 1961 he began teaching at the University of Kansas and continued teaching until his retirement, as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, on December 31,1993.
Paul is survived by his wife, Jean, of the home; a son, Mark, Lawrence; four grandchildren, Matt, Amanda, Emily and Eric: five great grandchildren, Tyler, Alison, I. Blaine, Chole and Owen. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Keefe (Mike) of Oklahoma, OK and Ann Reich (Joe) of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Margo, a grandson P.J. II and a brother John.
Family will greet friends at the Church prior to the services.
Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery will follow a luncheon at the Church.
