Memorial services for Patrick William Whalen, 63, Lawrence will be held 11 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2011 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Private family burial will be held prior to the Memorial service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. He died December 19, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 14, 1948 in Ottumwa, IA the son of John and Marian (O’Meara) Whalen.
He served our country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Patrick received a BA in Criminal Justice from LaVerne University in LaVerne, CA, he also received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA.
He worked as a Warden for the United States Department of Justice at many locations around the United States. More recently, he was co-founder and owner of Resolution Services, LLC, a consulting firm in Lawrence with his daughter, Amy.
He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Senior Executive Service and Alvamar Country Club.
He married Glenda Elliott on October 19, 1973. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Amy Risley, Lawrence; one son, Mark Snedker, Denver, CO; Three grandchildren, Joseph, Mari, and Alex Risley; one sister, Mary Kaye Whalen, Washington, IL. He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Whalen.
The family will greet friends following the memorial service.

I worked for Mr. Whalen when he was Warden at FCI, Petersburg, VA. I’m sorry to hear of the loss of this very kind and fair man. My condolences to the family.
Glenda and family, I wanted you to know that we have received some nice donations to Kids in Crisis and one included a card that I will send on to you. My heart is with you all during this holiday season…a hard time to face a loss. Know that you are loved by so many!
I am an old HS friend of Pat’s. So sorry about your loss. Pat was one of those special people and was sorry that we lost contact over the years..though I did talk to him over the phone last year. Again..he will be missed.

I was so sorry to learn of your brother’s death. I’m not even sure that you’ll remember me. I certainly remember the slumber parties that we ( Jeanne Wagner,Jeanie Mickens, Gail Waddell, Karen Wells) attented at your house. Your entire family was always so nice.
I lost my only brother about 6 years ago to prostate cancer. He was diagnosed in 2000 and made the best of it and lived life to the fullest until his struggle ended in 2005.
2 out of 3 of our children attended M.U. in Columbia and actually our youngest, Josh, was accepted at K.U. for law school. We visited the town and loved it and arranged for an apartment for him and moved him in and the last minute, he received an invite to attend Wash U. in St. Louis and so we moved him to a new place and there he studied for 3 years. He is an attorney in Chicago with 2 darling little girls. Our middle daughter, Angie, graduated as a nurse from M.U., met a young man who had graduated from there 5 years prior and they married and have 3 boys and live in Olathe, Ks. So we are certainly familiar with his home town. He was so accomplished. You must have been so very proud of him. Our oldest daughter, Lisa, has only one son, Jake, and he currently is in the Air Force reserves and stationed at Bagram A.F.B. in Afghanistan.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Pat. I knew him from HS. He was one of those special people you never forget.

Warden Whalen was the best Warden I worked for in my 20 year career. So out of 10 wardens, he was the greatest. Rest is peace…..
Glenda, Amy and family – I worked for Mr. Whalen at FCI Petersburg and then at USP Florence. He was a wonderful person, a great leader and mentor. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I am a past acquaintance of Pat a graduate classmate from WaCoHi. Pat was a very neat guy and someone you just enjoyed to be around a great sence of humor. Pat and I had a great experience in competitive swimming as members of a swim team at our community Swim Club in Washington, Ill. Pat was very competitive and I found myself challenged to compete with him during those summers of our youth. We enjoyed our swim team coach a young college student who treated us to dinners at the Steak and Shake in East Peoria after swim meets in the Peoria area. The memories of Pat bring back great memories from my childhood and I am sorry I have not kept in touch all these years. my condolences to you and your entire family as I know his passing was I great loss.
