Opal Temple

Funeral services for Opal J. Temple, 85, Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, KS.  Private burial will  be in the Highland Union Cemetery in SW Douglas County, KS.  She died on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at her home.

She was born on October 8, 1923 in Parsons, KS, the daughter of James K. and Mildred Watts Martin.

Mrs. Temple was a retired elementary school, reading teacher.  She had taught in USD 497 for 36 years before retiring in 1994.  Prior to this, she taught in the Kansas City, MO school district.

She received her B.A. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and her M.A. from the University of Kansas.  She was a member of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church, the Lawrence Teachers’ Association and the Kansas Teachers’ Association.

She was married to Marion O. Temple on July 31, 1960 in Kansas City, MO.  He survives of the home.  Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Disney (husband, Barry) of Topeka, KS, two sisters; Vera DeMott (husband, John) of Lawrence, KS, Betty Cobb (husband, Gene) of Baldwin City, KS and three grandchildren; Emily Disney, Atticus Disney, and Hayley Disney.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Lawrence Free Methodist Church or to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Rehabilitation and Hospice Services and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
