Norma Woolard

Norma Jean Woolard, 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.  She was surrounded by her family and a network of supportive caregivers.  She will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, golfer, librarian, and friend.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 10th and Vermont.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Norma “Jean” was born on October 25, 1918 in Fairland, OK the daughter of Ben and Opal Vann Smith.

Jean attended school in Fairland, OK where she excelled in academics and on the basketball court.  She graduated from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, OK and then taught English in several grades.  She married Allan “Al” Woolard on June 29, 1940 in Purcell, OK.  They moved to Lawrence in 1950, where Allan coached football at Lawrence High School and Jean was a librarian at Sunset Hill and Centennial Elementary Schools after completing her Library Science Degree at Emporia State University.  Jean led an active life as an avid golfer, bridge player, and supporter of Lawrence High football.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Alvamar Ladies Golf Association, and Kappa Kappa lota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan “Al” Woolard in 1998; her parents; and her three brothers, Hal “Happy”, David, and Norris.  She is survived by her son, Mickey, and his wife, Berta, Lawrence, KS; one grandson, Andy, and his wife, Katiy, Boulder, CO; one granddaughter, Kelsey, and her fiancé, Ryan, Marysville, KS; sister-in-law, Betty, and one nephew, Randy, and wife Syd, Portland, OR.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Lawrence Schools Foundation for the Allan and Norma Jean Woolard Memorial Scholarship and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
