Funeral services for Millard Elden Murray, 85, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Military graveside honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Murray died March 3, 2011 at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
Millard was born on October 20, 1925 in Lawrence, KS, the son of Melvin and Eva Snapp Murray.
Mr. Murray served his country as a Boatsmate 1st Class in the United States Navy during WWII. He served on the Charles Lawrence, the Battleship Wyoming, and the Landing Craft Infantry-691.
He worked as a carpenter until he retired in 1987.
Mr. Murray was a member of the Landing Ship Medium Association #243, and was a member of the Eudora United Methodist Church.
He married Leola Evelyn Bond Murray on February 20, 1946 in Eudora, KS. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2009.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Hamilton, Gas City, KS, Jean Eberhart, Lawrence, KS, and Jane Lamb, St. George, KS; three sons, Mike Murray, Topeka, KS, Dennis Murray, Lawrence, KS, Gary Murray, Baldwin City, KS; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Opal Corel, Baldwin City, KS; two sisters-in-law, Carol Belles, Lawrence, KS, and Edna Holmes, Eudora, KS and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Floyd Murray; and one sister, Arletta Snodgrass.
The family will greet friends from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011 at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or American Legion – Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
Millard and I were first cousins … I have known him all my life … he and his sweetheart of a wife Leola will be missed by everyone who knew them. Heaven has become a sweeter place in the last few days.
In Millards last e-mail to us he was looking forward to our family reunion in Abilene, Texas. He will be greatly missed. We loved his stories and his great sense of humor. We thank God he is with his beloved Leola in heaven.
Millard and I were distant cousins, but I remember he and Leola coming to the Square Fair in Garnett each year to sell various woodworking and other craft projects and we’d visit. I still have a clown he made my children when they were babies and will always remember that he and Leola took time to come to my daughter’s first birthday party. I am so glad they have been reuntited in heaven where we know they are no longer in any pain.
Millard and I were distant cousins. My mother was a Murray. While we never met until late in life, I grew very fond of him, and always looked forward to seeing him and Leola and all my kinfolk at the reunions. I will miss him dearly. Willis Harris
Millard was my cousin and we were very close. He was such a good kind person to everyone he meet. Even though we didn’t see him often we loved him dearly. Now we know that he is up heaven with his wife and family.
I am so sad at his passing but I am comforted in the fact that I will see both of my sweet, special friends/cousins when I get to HEAVEN. They meant so much to me. Love and prayers to all the family. I love ya’ll dearly.

My husband and I had the most fortunate opportunity to live next door to the lovely Murrays from July 2009-January 2010. After Leola’s passing, I became closer to Millard and “adopted” him as my grandpa. We regularly met to go out and “put on the feed bag”, as he liked to say. This man brought so much happiness and laughter to my life; my husband and I are so very blessed to have known him. We will miss him dearly but take comfort in knowing he’s resting in eternal peace now, with his beloved Leola. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family members. Please know that Millard was a bright spot in our lives, and we’ll never forget him!
Millard will be sadly missed. His sense of humor and stories as I was working on his tractor/farm equipment will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with Millard’s family and distant family.
