Services for Michael Dean Hemphill, 61, of Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2012 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. He died on Friday, August 17, 2012 at his home after a battle with cancer. By his side was his longtime companion, Cindy Quick.
He was born on July 16, 1951 in Lawrence, KS the son of Arthur Charles and Ruth Ellen Colburn Hemphill. He was born during the Great Flood of 1951, when his mother arrived at Lawrence Memorial Hospital via a small airplane.
Michael (Mike) received an Associate’s Degree from Garden City Community Junior College.
A third-generation farmer in the area, Michael followed in the footsteps of his father, Art, and his grandfather, Joseph Charles Hemphill.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence.
Michael is survived by his companion Cindy Quick, of the home, his sisters and their spouses, Judith (Hemphill) and Gerald Hundley, Lawrence, KS, Linda (Hemphill) and Donald Buttron, of Nortonville, KS, nephew and nieces, Jay Hundley of Baldwin, Jody Hundley of Irving, TX, Jane Hundley of Lexington, MA, Kelly (Buttron) Jobbins of Nortonville, and Kristy Strother of Nortonville; and seven great nephews and nieces.
His family will remember him for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and gentle ways.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses or to the Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the mortuary.
When I heard that Michael was gone, I wanted to let you know how sorry I was. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Life is so precious. May his life remind us to cherish each moment. When I lost someone dear to me, I was told of a precious hope found in the Holy Scriptures. Jesus relayed a promise from his heavenly Father-Jehovah-(Ps.83:18) that the hour is coming in which there would be a bringing back to life (or resurrection) of all those in the memorial tombs (John 5:28). I draw comfort knowing that one day I will see my sister again and will be able to embrace her right here on earth. (Psalms 37:29) Although it doesn’t completely take away the pain that is felt today, I pray that you can draw comfort from that same hope of seeing Michael again. Loving thoughts and prayers of peace are with you. Jeremiah 29:11,12.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this sad time. I never got the opportunity to meet Mike but if he was anything like the rest of his family he had to be a wonderful man. My heart goes out to all of you.
I have so many fond memories of Mike. How time and life pass away so fast. It is hard for me to believe he has passed away. Happy Trails Mike. And May the Peace of God go with you.
I’m honored to have known, worked and played with Mike over the past 40+ years. He will be missed and never forgotten. Thoughts and prayer to all friends and family.
Mike was a part of my life from when I was in 3rd Grade til my college years. He was a big part of my life growing up and I have so many fond memories. In a lot of ways, he was a part of who I am today. I will always be grateful for the things he taught me. Mike, you will always be a part of me. My deepest thoughts to all of the family.
Mike was an important part of life. He taught me how to drive tractors, grain trucks and would let me borrow his “cool” truck to take out with the girls on the weekend. He instilled in me the love of agriculture, supported me in my high school FFA endeavors and into my college life. Thank you Mike! You will be missed. My deepest sympathy to the Hemphill family.
