Memorial Services for long-time Douglas County resident, Margaret Colman Wulfkuhle, 98, Lawrence will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012 at First Christian Church in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date. Pastor David Rivers will be officiating. She died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at her home.
Margaret was born on November 4, 1913 in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of Asa R. and Nellie (Everett) Colman.
Margaret attended Kanwaka Grade School and Liberty Memorial High School and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1937 with Phi Beta Kappa honors and a B.A. in Sociology.
She taught for eleven years in elementary schools and two years in Continuing Education at KU. She later worked in the Audio and Visual Department at the University of Kansas as an Audio/Visual Methods Supervisor.
She was married to Ross E. Wulfkuhle on March 7, 1943 in Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death November 19, 2009.
Margaret was a member of the Kanwaka Literary Club, Betty Washington Chapter of the DAR, First Christian Church, Lecompton Historical Society, and KU Alumni Association. She was a 1927 charter member of the Kanwaka 4-H Club and served as an adult leader for many years. She was an active member of the Kanwaka FCE for 47 years and received the Heart of FCE Award in 2002, recognizing her outstanding service in every aspect of the organization. Ross and Margaret were unofficial good will ambassadors for their rural neighborhood, respected for their friendliness, generosity, and work ethic. They were particularly interested in family, local, and Kansas history. Margaret once wrote that she tried to make a difference in the community by caring for her neighbors and helping young people achieve their goals.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda and husband, Guido Cecchini, Vero Beach, Florida, and Virginia Wulfkuhle, Topeka.
The family will greet friends following the services at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or Kansas 4-H Foundation – Ralph Colman Achievement Award and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
My heart goes out to you in this time of sorrow. Margret’s power-house friendship and out-streatched hands of love will be missed very much.
She was ill for such a long time, I ran out of things to say long ago. I am always surprised by obituaries, usually pleasantly, as in this case, by what a rich full life she had for so many years. She and my late grandmothers-in-law would have spoken the same language denied to us modern youngsters. May you and Linda catch hold of the joy of the many good years as these last few fade as the postscript to a life well lived and loved.
I’m praying that the GOD of Grace and Mercy will surround you with comfort.
No matter how ready you think you are, you really aren’t. Thinking of you all during this time of grief. Margaret will be missed. Mom sends her love and sympathy.

Virginia and Linda, I so admired both of your parents. They were such fine people. I am saddened by the loss of your mother and my heart goes out to you. Our love and sympathy to you.
I will never forget the dedication of Margaret and Ross during the American Revolution Bicentennial Celebration in Douglas County. A few years ago, my twin grandsons were at an afernoon movie, and Margaret and Ross were there. They said they were celebrating their anniversary with a movie and dinner at McDonalds! What a precious pair they were, and now they are together again. Linda and Virginia, you can be proud of the lives your parents lived. They made important contributions to Kansas.

The Leslie family send strength and love during this time for anyone that was touched by this wonderful lady. I have been apart of Kanwaka 4-H for 25years and have learned many things from Margaret and will cherish the memorys and pass them on to other 4-Hers.

Margaret was a wonderful Sunday School teacher. I will never forget the contests to see who could find the called Bible verse first. She was so encouraging (as was your father) and great at building community. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Your mother was a lovely lady. Reading about her, she must have been quite a respected and loved person…doing so much for her community. I can see where you get your ambition! My condolences.
We dearly loved your mother and enjoyed thoroughly the wonderful and creative presentations she gave for the family reunions. She is truly a treasure and will be greatly missed.

I knew Margaret as a no-nonsense, caring, person who quietly went about the business of life with little fanfare. Big strong Ross and endless energy Margaret simply did more for more people over more time than most people even live. There may not be any statues erected for them, but the memory of them and their endless good works lives on in all of us. God bless both of them.
I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Margaret was extraordinary and she will be truly missed.
