Memorial services for Lorraine E. Hammer, 86, Lawrence, KS, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church (2104 Bob Billings Parkway) in Lawrence, KS. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. She died on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born on September 10, 1924 in Rydal, KS, the daughter of Archie B. and Ida E. Cartmel Carpenter. She moved to Lawrence from Claflin, KS in 1945.
Mrs. Hammer was a 1948 graduate of the Kansas University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
She retired after 31 years of service in the Physiology and Cell Biology Department of the University of Kansas. She was a certified member of the Electron Microscopy Society.
Since 1946, Mrs. Hammer was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s League of the church. She was also a member of the KU Alumni Association, the Gold Medal Club, the KU Retirees Club, Honorary Mortar Board Alumni and the Advisory Board of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She was a 42 year member of the Cosmopolitan Pals, and a member of IK Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood.
She was married to Lucian B. “Lou” Hammer on February 7, 1947 in Claflin, KS. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons; Robert (wife, Malinda) Hammer, of Thousand Oaks, CA, Gary (wife Julie) Hammer, of Lawrence, KS, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Lou Gilpin.
The family suggests memorials in her name to the Immanuel Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Though I did not know Lorraine personally, her wonderful family are a testament to the beauty she emanated and grace she ministered to her loved ones. My prayers are with you, as I am sure she is deeply missed. Much love, Anj Riffel

Aunt Rainey was always a bright, shining, comfort! She helped us during the most difficult time in our lives, when our mother passed, and I will forever be grateful for her. I like to think she is welcomed home by my mother and father and all the Claflin relatives.
She will be missed but always, always in our hearts and memories.
I always enjoyed Lorraine’s wit and smile. She will be missed in our P.E.O. circle. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. She was a special one.

Aunt Rainey was a wonderful lady with a fabulous spirit. She will be truly missed but take comfort that she is at peace.She will live on in our hearts until we see her again along side our loved ones we have lost through out the years. Love Sonya
The loss of our Aunt Rainey is very sad as she was always a rock in our family providing the utmost kindness, compassion and caring even if just on the telephone as many miles separated us most always. Aunt Rainey was my Godmother as well and I shall treasure the times in the eighties and early nineties when we spent time together shopping and enjoying a lunch even visiting her office at the university where someone later inquired if I was her younger sister. That gave us both a chuckle. Aunt Rainey made me feel special when I was with her and I shall always keep that in my heart. My father James Westbrook always said she was a rare person with the utmost integrity and grace. I shall not say goodbye but adieu till we meet again dear Rainey. God speed…

Lorraine was a dear friend of Ruthanne’s, and our family’s were friends for too many years to count. I suppose that all started when we were Learnard / Barker / Cordley School neighbors, way back in the day. Anyway, I’m impressed how long Lorraine persevered through all her illness, never losing her ever-cheery outlook. Lorraine was a technician in the laboratory where I was a post-doctoral fellow in the 1980’s. I remember her love of flowers that she grew. I remember the many times I would tease her by moving the position of a single pen on her desk by about a mere 15 degrees degrees and when she arrived at work in the morning she would call out my name and in her gentle way bring me to task.
I remember Lou Hammer also. Super nice guy. In fact I examined his kidney stone in a microscope. When I opened this page and saw her photo I was sent back in time 35 to 37 years ago. You were such a nice lady. You are remembered.
