Juanita Riley

The Mass of Christian Burial for Juanita June Riley, 85, Lawrence, KS will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in the Lapeer Community in SW Douglas County, KS. Burial will follow the mass in the Rochester Cemetery in North Topeka, KS. A Parish Rosary is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family will greet friends from 6:30 – 8 p.m., following the Rosary. She died on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

She was born June 14, 1924 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William L. & Alta Phillips Arnold.   She had lived for many years in Hutchinson, KS and moved to Lawrence in 1994 from Hutchinson.

She was a graduate of Licensed Practical Nurse Training at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. Her hobbies included fishing, traveling, card games, table games and generally providing hospitality to the residents of Vermont Towers in Lawrence, for many years. 

Mrs. Riley was a retired licensed practical nurse. She had worked at the KU Medical Center, St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, both in Hutchinson. She retired in 1991.
 
She was married to Alvin J. Riley on June 29, 1957 in Hutchinson, KS. He preceded her in death in November 1993.
 
Survivors include: a daughter, Jean and husband, Bill Hegeman of rural Lawrence, KS, a son, Thomas and wife Marilyn Eberhart of Hutchinson, KS, two sisters; Alice Maxine Flack of Augusta, MI, Dixie Lee Dodson, of Topeka, KS, eight grandchildren (Rebecca Grammer, Michael Hegeman, Annette Glahn, Mark Hegeman, Lisa Zwiener, Christy Adkins, Cary Eberhart, Sunshine Groves), eighteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.  
 
The family suggests memorials in her name to the Heart of America Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

    I remember Juanita well at the sing-a-longs that Tim O’Brien and I were doing at Vermont Towers beiginning perhaps 10 or so years ago. She was always one of the “organizers” and very welcoming to everyone. May she rest in peace. +gloria
